Is this eBay AG 1916-D a reasonable example?

Was browsing eBay... Saw this. Price might be right for a hole filler, but I'm a bit nervous about buying 1916-D uncertified (don't trust my grading skills yet). Opinions welcome. BTW: If the seller is a board member - this question isn't supposed to be a reflection on you, just a question of uncertainty on my part that stems from lack of good identification and grading skills.

My opinion, never buy an uncertified key date on eBay...especially a 16-D. The coin's probably real, but it's just not worth the chance to me.

Positive BST transactions with: too many names to list! 36 at last count.

Agreed. Better to pay the price for the right piece than to have the right piece missing for the price you paid.

I'd steer clear. For a few more $$$ you can get a certified one. Why on earth take the chance????

  • I don't like the look of the D mint mark. I wouldn't chance it.

Checked out his FB, sold a 14D cent on July 2nd. Buyer left pos. FB.

I agree with others about buying a raw key on ebay, be careful.

It's not your typical fuzzy pic of the reverse, either. Makes me wonder if it's the real deal?

First pic is a legit 16D, in G04, the second is the auction pic. The auction pic looks to be in AG condition, IMHO.

Thanks for the advice. I will pass on this auction. I'll take my money to a coin show and look for a certified 1916-D.

The pic above was GREAT. Thank you.

    Cheers,

Don't forget, eye appeal should be your first thought when you are buying a coin, whether it is $3.00 or $30K!....(even on lower circulated grades!) And just because it is a key does not mean it's pretty! You will find a better one than this! Be patient! image
More reasons to pass on it than there is to buy it in my opinion!!! image

First, the coin in the auction is only an FR2, and while it may be real, the way Mercs usually wear the MM should be much more worn down IMO.

    Here's a pic of my real AG3:
