You want the ANA show in Omaha?

A week or so ago, there was a thread about Omaha being off limits to CSNS shows. In the ANA survey I received today, Omaha is one of the many cities listed in a question soliciting cities that appeal to you for a convention. Conspicuously missing from that list are Cincinnati, Columbus, and Cleveland. There's also a question asking to rate the importance of taxation at local shows. Gee you think there's a connection there?

Tax issues or not, there aren't that many people who have a desire to travel to any city in Ohio on their own free will.

I just took the survey.
Too bad it was one of the worst designed surveys I have ever taken. To add to the frustration, the survey scrolled back to the top every time I made a selection.

They are lucky I finished it. The ANA should never use that Zoomerang survey outfit again.

As far as Omaha goes, the survey asked for up to 5 preferred sites from a long list of cities. For me, Omaha didn't make the top 5.

Personally I think there is no better city to host the ANA Conventions than San Francisco, but judging by the overall dealer sentiment after the one in 2005 I don't think another one will come back anytime soon.

Until California fixes their sales tax laws, I am dead set against any shows in that state.

I don't think the ANA has ever been in Minneapolis, but the large CSNS show was there not too many years ago.

The next two summer ANA shows will be in states in which the majority of transactions to collectors would be applicable to sales tax. Something tells me the issue is actually not that big as its talked up to be, or that it's not the majority of collectors we are really talking about.

Geoman, the ANA held one convention in Minneapolis. It was in 1936 -- the same year Alf M. Landon (a former employer of mine!) was the Republican's presidential nominee....

Omaha does not have sufficient population within the potential market area for a National Convention to be successful. A spring show might work for ANA. (The percentage of millionaires is meaningless – wealthy collectors do include travel distance or cost as impediments to purchases. The wealthiest spend little more on non-coin services than the collector of more modest means.)

I noticed that Chicago and Indianapolis was mentioned, but not St. Louis or Louisville, KY. I am 2-2.5 hours from Indianapolis and St. Louis, 3.5-4 hours from Chicago. Chicago had their last ANA in 1999, and I do not recall Indianapolis, St. Louis, or Louisville hosting one in the last several years. Chicago should have one but maybe in a few years or so. St. Louis would work as Missouri has no tax on coins, but Indianapolis and Louisville, while decent places to host an ANA, would be at a disadvantage due to the sales tax on coins in Indiana and Kentucky, respectively. It is because of the sales tax (and the increasing enforcement of it at shows) in Indiana that I will no longer set up a table in that state. For now, I only do shows in Illinois and any state which has no tax on coins. The 3 C's (Cincinnati, Columbus, and Cleveland) in Ohio would be nice places but Ohio's repressive sales tax on coins (thank you Mr. Noe, you putz) would be problematic. And I noticed that the upcoming ANA shows are either in the east or west coasts, and none in the south or in the midwest. Midwesterners and Southerners - do you think its a slap in the face?

Regarding Omaha, I think it wouldn't be a bad to host an ANA event but a couple people from the CSNS leadership (the current Prez and a board member) are on the ANA board and I would not be the least bit surprised that they (by the way, those people I'm talking about are current VP FInner and Board Member Wolka) would shoot it down the same way they did it in CSNS.

I did not vote for Omaha in my top 5, but if the show is ever there we will all need to meet for breakfast at WheatFields. It is simply the best!
