About Time! July - EBay creates New Categories for Coin Copies & Reproductions

"COINS & PAPER MONEY
As a part of our ongoing site-wide effort to distinguish replicas from original pieces, we're adding more categories throughout Coins & Paper Money to classify Reproductions. We've made lots of other additions, including new country-specific categories to expand our Coins: World and Paper Money: World sections"

About time for the scamsters.

That's the best idea they've had in some time.

    This is a start.

eBay will probably rely upon complaints from users to identify the listings that are in the wrong category now. So, I don't think we can treat this as 'problem solved' yet. It's part of the solution. Now, it's a matter of educating the sellers as to where to list their goods.

Just because it's there doesn't mean people will use it...

reproduction, "proof coin", tribute, drives me nuts...

No, they won't use it because no one surfs in those categories for long.

Remember that ebay encourages sellers to list in multiple categories to boost final values so this will not help at all unless they mandate that copies and repros be only listed in the copy category. Wouldn't that be nice?

When I list an item ebay encourages me to list in multiple categories to increase their fees. When I accidently list a coin in the wrong category, all that happens is that less people see it. So what will keep sellers of replicas from continuing to list in the category for the real ones? --Jerry

BTW, selling a properly marked copy, as almost all of them on ebay are, is not a scam. It is just a PITA to find a real one mixed in. --Jerry
  • By all rights, these should NEVER be listed as US Coins because they are NOT.

I bet this is the start of forcing all copies, reproductions to list under the 'right' category.

You have to wonder about the idiots who win these auctions and actually think they got a real coin despite what it says.

Don't think there are many, if any, of those. They list them under the real coin category to get traffic and views, not to fool anyone. --Jerry

I also would prefer that all copies, reproductions, "tribute" coins, etc. be in the COPIES & REPRODUCTIONS category rather than clutter up the coin categories. Seated dollars, for example, has appx. 5 pages, of which 4 are copies! image
