I started to bid on this coin, but changed my mind at the last minute, did I miss out on a 1886 VAM-20?

Nope. That is definitely a VAM-1G.

  • I also thought it might be a vam 20, so I took a chance on it. So John's response is bad news for me, since I won it. I'm sure he is correct, since he knows as much as anyone about vams, certainly much more than me.

Let us know what VAM it was when you get the coin.
  • When I saw the clashing and the die cracks around the date, I thought it was unlikely to be a vam 20, but the photo did appear to have the characteristic doubling at the base of the "1". So the optimist in me thought that maybe the vam 20 die was in the process of failing, explaining its short life.

But, in any case, a $42 mistake is nothing to cry about. I have made much more costly ones.

Don't feel bad, I too would have bid, if I'd seen it. The cracks and the clash certainly add intrigue to the piece.
