250th post - identify this coin (ID made at bottom)

For my 250th post I thought I'd share an image of a favorite from my collection. Can you identify the series of coin, date and any other specific information about the coin based on the image? It might be easy for a few of you so let some of the others have a chance first, perhaps.

Thanks to everyone for the great education, advice and entertainment I've received from this forum since joining.

    Easy?! LOL.

The reverse looks to be from the Bust series because of the "Liberty" die clash, and from the proportion I am guessing dime or half dime. I have not seen a Half Dime with those awesome die clashes, so my guess is a Bust Dime. 1829 Bust Dime is my uneducated guess.

Now that I think about it, the "Liberty" die clash's position would put it from the sheild in the seated series- so revised to 1841 Seated Dime.

    Bust series - yes
    CBH - yes

Interesting to hear your thinking, NHSBaseball. The position of the clash is certainly one of the identifiers.

    Here is the answer

--From the number of crossbars it must be a half dollar
    --No center dot
--Can't see the extensions of the pales through the crossbars,
    or other details

Assume it is an 1810 O-101, or an 1814 O-102 CBH, without further
information believe it is the latter.
If correct,,,do I win the coin?

Getting closer, CZ and LoveMyLiberty, much closer. And yet, no clashed lettering in the field beneath the feathers... According to Overton and the images I see at CoinZip, the 1814 O.102 (which would have been my first guess as well) has lettering clashed in the shield and the field. This one doesn't. Hmmmn.....

Is this an O-102a with a sinking die?
Or is it a very early die state?

Should I give you my address for this generous giveaway??

Great post...wish I could contibute, but it's definitely got me interested. Thanks.

It's not the 102a sinking die (interesting conjecture) nor is it the 14/13 (which I do have so I suppose I should answer yes to that question). As far as an address for a giveaway, well... that ain't gonna happen. I enjoy this coin too much!

Any other varieties known to have clashes within the shield?

CBH... The letters "B.E.B" across the middle of the shield is some sort of counterstamp ???
  • zap1111zap1111 Posts: 1,298 ✭✭
Actually it's BERTY (LI doesn't show) reversed - it's a die clash, an impression from the obverse of the coin (the LIBERTY from the headband). A counterstamp is a very interesting guess!

Zap, Let me first say this is an excellent post!!! This type of educational discussion is
what drew me to this site many years ago. Unfortunately, IMHO, it has failed in it's
original intent over recent years & is now a substitute for the open forum.

As to the coin & your original question. The answer, it seems to me, would be NO, you
can't deduce the coin from your single image, at least not just with the Overton reference.
The discussions at CoinZip seem to be very informative. Did you have another source to
attribute your coin as O-107? Nice coin,,,great thread,,,thank you much!

Wow, I couldn't have been much more wrong! Oh, well- c'est la vie, cher!

That was a fun post- it had me up for a while with the Overton book and still stumped me. Pretty coin, as well.

I'm glad you enjoyed the thread. I think one of the principle reasons I'm attracted to the CBH series is the amount of detective work that awaits someone interested in collecting by die marriage and variety.

I typically first use Russ Peterson's "Ultimate Guide to Attributing Bust Half Dollars" when checking out a CBH and find his charts to be very handy. The information gained then sends me to Overton for confirmation.

The first photo didn't show the die lump above the wing (on purpose) as this is a dead giveaway for the IDS and LDS of the 1812 O.107 (the EDS doesn't have one). I thought someone might get the ID because many of the 107s have the clashing of the LIBERTY letters in the shield.

I might try this kind of post again sometime.
