My new scanner won't scan currency!!??

LanLordLanLord Posts: 11,725 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'm not sure if it's keying on new anticounterfeit features in currency or if it keys on a simple shape that matches a piece of currency, I'll need to test older bills and foreign, but dang, that's annoying. That's one thing I wanted the scanner for! scanning my collection is going to be more difficult!

Well, just return it and buy and camera. Problem solved.
    Glad I could help.

It's probably an anti-counterfeiting measure. For years, Adobe Photoshop would not let you edit/print major currency designs.

I would rather have a printer that will print currency! You may be right about the anti-counterfeiting feature.

Your scanner has "wrong forum" software built-into it.image

Have you tried to personalize your scan? Setting up a custom "scanning template". Essentially it tells the scanner to scan only a section of the glass X by X inches. And by doing this you have less black space to crop.

    Just a thought.

I'll need to see if i can do this, but i'm pretty sure it's an anticounterfeit feature and won't allow an override

Many new scanners will not scan currency, and I am not aware of any overriding features. Post your issue on the currency side.

I use an HP 3970 and have no problems.

I am using an older HP 4370, and can scan US currency and 99% of stuff with no problem. Until this came along and joined my collection:

    image

Because of the moire patterns in this 1942 dated note printed by Joh. Enschede in the Netherlands, it was absolutely impossible to scan unless I cranked up the image size, then the resolution to 1200 dpi, and afterwards reduced the image size in Image Composer. I have several Dutch notes from this era here:

    Netherlands Banknotes

And all but the 25 Florin were PITA's to scan. Who says old printing tech cannot fool modern equipment?

It may be the same anti-counterfeiting safeguard that many of the new copy machines have. The Credit Union I work in is the same way with our scanner and copier.
  • It's a device used for anti-counterfeiting.

There was a really cool show on the History channel about a week ago regarding
counterfeit currency (where it began, how it was done, etc.)

The show was made in around 2004, and stated that companies like Xerox were
beginning to make their machines detect currency and not allow it to be scanned or printed.

I know here at Canon, our color printers will not scan currency.
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

Very interesting. I didn't realize that. It makes sense--keeps a lot of kids out of trouble--but a PITA for currency collectors. I guess a camera is the right answer.--Jerry

How does the scanner determine if the currency is currency and not an image of something?
  • SaorAlbaSaorAlba Posts: 7,593 ✭✭✭✭✭
Built into the software programme is a recognition programme that will diss known currency patterns and render the images unusable.

There are also patterns on checks, they have to be copied to a different size. This is on the color copiers only.

The current scan or copy job cannot proceed because this product does not support the unauthorized scan or copy of banknotes. For information, see www.rulesforuse.org. >>

Very interesting. Just today I had to make a color copy of a check, and the copier enlarged it to a very big size automatically. I just assumed that I hit the wrong button (heaven forbid that my secretary actually make the copy for me).

As I understand it, there are a bunch of security measures, but one of them involves a specific pattern ("consellation") of five symbols. There is a discussion of them on Euro notes here. On US notes, the symbols appear to be made up of gold-colored denomination numerals. Someone should be able to find a link with a picture.
