How have your coin purchases changed over the past 3 years-Keets I am trying

lcoopielcoopie Posts: 8,873 ✭✭✭✭✭
I am using 3 years as this is most pertinent for me and I thought it up image

Use this format (if you like) in % of total purchases by Dollar Value
first % is 3 years ago, second % is currently

these are my stats (approx of course)

US Mint 50 5
Ebay 50 8
Real Auction Houses 0 0
Dealers 0 85
BST 0 2
Pocket Change 0 0

I hope this flies with Keets

    Dramatically.

3 years ago I had several ebaY purchases a month, Several Teletrade, a few Heritage and you could even throw in a Bowers, Stacks and Superior purchase every few months. Oh yeah can't forget the U.S. mint. Very few dealer purchases.

2 years ago, Less on the auctions and a few dealer purchases.

1 year ago, only a couple of auction purchases and a couple of dealer purchases.

This year, 1 auction and several dealer transactions.

See a trend. I am getting more picky on what I buy. image

Over the past 3 month, they've come to almost a halt.

My lovely wife of 20+ years decided to check out our bank statements a few month ago, something she hasn't in done in years. Whenever I wanted to buy a coin I would just stroke a check, no problem. All the bills were being paid and the retirement plan was being funded, again no problem. Well at least no problem for me, she did have a problem with the amount I was spending though..image

So she decided on a new set of rules. I now get $150 a week "allowance" and so does she. Her allowance goes in the "back" money and
I can buy all the coins I want, as long as I don't spend over $150. Of course now if we go out to eat, which we do about once a week we use my allowance, a drink for the road(soda, water,) my allowance. The grandson comes over, my allowance....

It's all good......I needed to be reeled back in, I was spending a bit much on my widgets.

  • I'd say it's about 50/50 eBay and BST. Not too many of the other venues.

this board is costing me MONEY

like Becoka I am becoming much pickier, and hopefully smarter

especially when I see what the other forum members have

    is it jealousy, or education?
or was I completely oblivious to finer aspects of our hobby 3 years ago?

    The bar is being raised

Funny you should pick today to ask about a three year time frame. Three years ago today (6/29/05) I was undergoing open heart surgery for blocked arteries; I had five arterial bypasses. There is nothing that will cause you to look at life so differently as a near death experience. While my thoughts certainly were mainly concentrated on family, children, grandchildren, my business, and life's accomplishments (or lack thereof), I also had much time to ponder my hobby, and where I was relative to where I had hoped to be (I spent one full month in the hospital prior to surgery recovering from congestive heart failure to make me strong enough for the surgery). Since that time I have sharpened my focus on a few specific areas of the half dimes, and that combined with the fortuitous and coincidental help of the Jules Reiver and William A. Harmon auction sales, which occured shortly thereafter, I have been able to acquire a few very significant half dimes which I otherwise might not have focused on. My coin purchases have become significantly more focused and intense, more purposeful, in order to 'complete' a comprehensive reference collection of half dimes, rather than merely making random purchases as if time were no object. Good Lord willing and the creek don't rise, I may one day live to see the 'completion' of my collection, and maybe even the ordered sale of that collection, rather than have it dispersed by my heirs.

3 years ago I was buying all kinds of stuff, and a lot of it, but focusing on VF range, crusty busties.

2 years ago I was buying pretty much only bust half dimes, lots of them.

1 year ago I was buying only bust half dimes in AU range (with an occasional lower grade coin if it were excessively rare). Again, was buying quite a few.

Now, I ain't buying chit. image

ps. I think everyone in our little bust nerd club is very thankfull that 3 years ago things went well for Mr.HalfDime. image
