How do coins play a role in a Bear Market...(NO PUN INTENDED)

BearBear Posts: 18,953 ✭✭✭
Quality rare coins, as PMs, play a role

as a means to protect the value of assets.

When the current downturn is concluded, the

coins may be sold in order to fund stocks at the

beginning of a new bull cycle.

There is always the chance that I may be wrong,

but since Real Estate, stocks and bonds have recently been

rather poor means of preserving capital, I have chosen

rare coins and So Called Dollars in High grade and rarity.

If I am right, I will crow, if I am wrong, I guess that I will

have to eat that tough crow.

The caveat however is this, you have to know what the

heck you are doing. Buy quality, at a realistic price and hold.

In order to cover my bets as to series I have purchased the

following

Bust coinage...MS-64 Quarters and Halves

Seated Liberty..MS-65 & PR-65 Quarters and PR-64 Half Cameo

Barber................MS-66 Half, MS-65 & PR-65Cameo Quarters

Stand Liberty Quarters.. MS-66 FH(strong) Quarters, Deep Luster ,untoned

Morgan Dollars...MS-64+ PL, MS-66 DMPL, MS-65 DMPL, MS-67 s, MS-64-65 CC Dollars

So Called Dollars.. MS-64-65PL, MS-65 to 65, SO CALLED DOLLARS with R-5 Rarity or higher.

I thought a Bear market was when Jelly donuts started selling for cheap.
  • Sounds like you have a very nice assortment...

I think you'll be just fine...

But I just can't resist adding a comment in response to the thread title...

How do coins play a role in a Bear Market???

If you have enough of them you can always buy donuts...image
Re: Slabbed coins - There are some coins that LIVE within clear plastic and wear their labels with pride... while there are others that HIDE behind scratched plastic and are simply dragged along by a label. Then there are those coins that simply hang out, naked and free image

Well I held stock and sold out the end of 2007.

Then I decided to put the money gradually into rare coins.

Regular reading of the financial thread on this Forum gave me

many leads to research to come to my decision to sell the stock.

IMO, we have yet to see the market stocks tank.
I would rather have my money in rare coins, gold and silver any day but....that just me.

btw, I think you are on the right track.

My simple logic on this is...

Coins hold value as long the people who want them continue to be willing to pay for them...

Stocks only hold value as long as the people pushing them want them to hold value...

...and if the kaka ever does hit the fan... that which will be valued will be food, shelter, good health, friendship and family... the only "true" values we have in this life...

...I could continue to follow this "logic" path but it would lead into the OT twilight zone...

...so I will only say this...Coins and the owning of coins as a collectible (or an investment) are luxuries afforded us due to an excess of the needed commodities...as long as our economy remains stable, coins will hold value... if it were to collapse...

I'm not saying it will collapse... just sharing my simple perspective... most folks in this world are busy scraping together enough coins to feed their family... it is a luxury to be able to not only save coins but to be able to consider them as collectibles... or investments...
if the economy were to fall apart...they would become meaningless

Other than a few astute collectors and assemblers I am not so sure coins play too much in a Bear Market. I feel they are independent of each other as most investors probably don't even know what a rare coin looks like let alone how the coin market works.

    A question....
If our dollar continues to drop and the economy tanks(even worse) image
Wouldn't the rare coins be even more attractive to overseas buyers?
    Therefore a wise investment...

Not sure about rare coins but maybe bullion.

I believe that money will be seeking items
that will serve as stores for value. As such,
rare coins will join diamonds, art, Gold and rare books
as a means to store money ,profitably ,in a small space.
Is it a risk? Of course it is, however what investment in
    the world has no risk.

The appearance of investment funds for rare coin is again

making its presence known. While this hot money will eventually

have the same effect it did the last time, top tier rare coins still

have a way to go in light of the falling dollar. There just seems

no good place for money but collectibles at this time of growing

    inflation.

<< <i>If all else fails, I still got me my guns. >>

Remember though, in times of crisis, people with guns will quickly run out of ammo. Keep around 500 rounds available and make sure your ammo is fresh.

In talking to friends about the guns they own, most have a couple of clips of ammo without thinking how far that will last them in bad times. Without bullets their guns are expensive paperweights.

short of destroying the country while capturing it, wouldn't it be better to have enough coin to BUY the country? image

Seriously, speaking of guns, I was reading the QDB book about California and the gold rush, if I was transporting gold around the way they had to, I think I'd want a Sharps rifle, a double-barrel shotgun, a couple of pistols, and a fast horse.

The book is a fun read.

Man, I hate guns. Anyway before this post becomes about guns and who has more and who has better etc etc yawn....

Coins sell in a bear market they just do not sell for as much. The current stock picture is interesting and like 911 I would buy at the bottom with the funds I had. The trick is not where the bottom will be. I think the stocks will go down further until November. Great buying opportunities in my opinion.

I would buy real estate over coins 7 days a week. As with everything dealing with money you have to know what you are doing. Just to buy a ms65 coin does not mean a thing if bought from legend or other big places. Now if you get the same coin at 30 back of bid, count me in. At retail i will pass. At retail you are already 30 percent in the hole for profit.

I grew up around guns but never owed more than a shotgun until 2 weeks ago. In my eyes Costa rica is small thinkingimage
