Question:2008 with Reverse 2007 Help!

I have a 2008 Silver Eagle /Reverse of 2007 that was graded by NGC as MS70. I just looked carefully at the back of the coin and there is a black type tiny spot near the I and C of America. It looks to me like a speck of dirt that was sealed with the coin. I know you can send a coin back to PCGS, but can you do the same with NGC?

Should I sell it like this, keep it for a little, or return to NGC. What would you guys do?

Thanks for all your help everyone. Puritan

Are you positive the black spot wasn't there when you sent the coin to NGC??

Is it a pit under 10x magnification??

I'm amazed it was graded MS70
  • I bought the coin from Gainesville Coins in May and just didn't look at it carefully. I don't have a magnifier that's 10x, but I am using one that I paid $35 and it has a light. It might even be a small mark in the plastic, but I can't see it.

I think the first thing to do
would be to see if the mark
    is on /in the coin
    or the plastic

Big difference in what you should do

Look at it from different angles with high magnification

  • I looked at it with 5x magnification and it looks like it is not on the coin, but I am not sure. I am going out and will buy a 10x magification and will look at it again.

Where can I buy 10x magnification?

Spend the time with a 10x loupe, and confrm where this spot is.

NGC amazes me with this gem. I was told it was breaks in the luster, and the 70 grade fits?

NGC grades them to loose. Below is an ASE, in a NGC 70 holder, amazing!

Why not jump in all the way and buy a nice scanning electron microscope (SEM)? You can look for defects at the nanometer level – what fun! MS-69.9251893021 anyone?

This series is not NGC's strong suit. Although there are a few I have questioned from PCGS as well.

Send it up in the next space shuttle launch, ask the astronat if the black spec vanished, if so it was not on the coin.image

Perfection is an illusion. Try and stop making yourself crazy looking for it. You are obsessing over something that you can't even see. Just try and enjoy the beauty of the design. image

  • Hi Everyone,
I took it down the street to our jeweler and confirmed that it was a black spot on the coin. I don't remember if it was there when I bought the coin. I have to admit that I didn't really check it.

I think I will call NGC on Monday to see what they say. I paid $400 so I think it is a least worth that. What do you guys think??? Thanks,Puritan
