Thornhead question for the Vam-types

Which stages, out of the 7 or so, are the rarest? Are there any lists out there in order of R-levels?

Any info/input is greatly appreciated.

Thank u
Lennie

I recently heard one of what I would consider an expert VAMer say that the 1B5 is the rarest.

In my own experience watching just about every 21 S that comes through eBay for five or six months now. I've seen 2 1B5's, but I havent seen a single 1B7 listed on there. I dont recall a 1B3 either.

I am curious what others have to say on this.

Just got another 1B4A in the mail yesterday. I'm hoping that by the end of the year I'll have at least one example of each die state.
I'll see your bunny with a pancake on his head and raise you a Siamese cat with a miniature pumpkin on his head.

You wouldn't believe how long it took to get him to sit still for this.

    Lennie:

Stages 1B1, 1B3, and 1B7 are by far the most difficult.
    Stages 1B2, 1B4, and 1B5 are tough.
Stage 1B6 is by far the easiest.

In the VAMview price archives I have no sales records whatsoever for 1B1, 1B2 or 1B7, and only a small handful for 1B3, 1B4 and 1B5:

    1921-S 1B3 40 raw Oct-07 E $51
    1921-S 1B4 45 PCGS Sep-07 PP $400
    1921-S 1B4 45 raw Jan-07 E $36
    1921-S 1B4A 45 ANACS Mar-07 E $190
    1921-S 1B5 58 NGC Apr-07 VQ $309
    1921-S 1B5 50 ANACS Jul-05 E $400
    1921-S 1B5 45 ANACS Dec-07 TT $44
    1921-S 1B5 40 raw Nov-07 E $88
    When in doubt, don't.

I'm aware of only two 1B7's. The discovery piece and Brian Raines found a cleaned VF a while back (which he claims to have sold w/o giving the 1921 guys a shot at it image )

So, I'd have to say 1B7. I think next is the one that started it all, the original thornhead, 1B3. I can't find it, it never somes up for sale...so it must be tough!

Thank you fellas....To date, i've located the 1B2, 1B5, and a few 1B6's......I would love to find me a 1B7.

My 1B5 is a beauty (MS63-ish) that I am hoping to get slabbed. Based on
the recent one I saw on EBAY unattrbuted in a PCGS holder (i believe MS63) that sold for around $1500, I got my fingers crossed image

    Have a fantastic weekend,

I need to get more intimate with the thornheads. I've neglected really going after them in earnest. It was my understanding that stages 1 and 7 were difficult and 4a was not easy either but, again, there are other VAM ffolks more in tune with the thornheads than me.

I'll agree with 1B7 as the rarest, 1B6 as the most common. Ranking them sounds like a project that could be undertaken in the form of a survey in a VAM-related newsletter. (Memo to self: put Thornhead survey in VAM-E)

I agree, the 1B6 seems to be the most common. A friend of mine and I recently had the opportunity to go through a bag of 500 1921 Morgans from all 3 mints. We each found a 1B6, although his was nicer image
