Book Recommendations

Hello.

Would all you Half and Large Cent collectors please recommend which books are essential to
have when collecting this type.

New to this, so would like to build a reference library .

Thanks

Wil

I really like Breen's half cent encyclopedia.
    Always took candy from strangers
Didn't wanna get me no trade
Never want to be like papa
Working for the boss every night and day

The key books for me are select auction catalogs. The upcoming sales of the "Naftzger collection" will be must have catalogs.

I've enjoyed Sheldon's Penny Whimsy, although the rarities are out of date. Have considered shelling out some money for Breen's Encyclopedia of Large Cents through 1814, what is everyone's opinion on that one? I also have Bob Grellman's late date book - more technical, but incredibly useful if you like the Braided Hairs. Auction catalogs are also good supplemental material - Jules Reiver comes to mind because I was amazed at how he collected everything from electrotypes to coins in bad shape to mint state rarities.

For the sake of argument let us say you are interested in Middle Date Large Cents then: John Wright The Cent Book, William Noyes Vol. 2,
Superior Galleries Robinson Brown I Sale and Superior Galleries Jack Robinson Sale and Stack's Herman Halpern Sale.

For Half Cents: Breen's Half Cent book, Cohen The Little Half Sisters, Stack's The Joseph Brobston Collection of United States Half Cents and
Stack's The Philip M. Showers Collection of United States Half Cents and Superier Galleries the Roger S. Cohen, Jr. Collection of Half Cents.

You are very fortunate, in that the field of early coppers has some incredible books written about it.

If I had to pick 3-4 books (there are probably 25-50 "must have" books for collectors who are really, really into early coppers), I would choose:

    1. Walter Breen's Half Cent Book.

    2. Walter Breen/Mark Borchart's Early Large Cent Book.

    3. John Wright's book on Middle Date Large Cents.

    4. Optional: Grellman's late date book (collecting the late dates by die variety isn't nearly as popular as collecting the other areas).
