Great news from Omaha about a convention!
Ok, Ok, I've been crying in my
here for the past couple of days about Omaha's inability on various levels to be able to attract a major convention.
But friends, my dispair has been turned to delight.
It was suggested to me that CSNS used to hold smaller, fall seminars in conjunction with local and state shows. The old grey matter started working and I realized that 09, Omaha Coin Club will be celebrating not only it's 75th Anniversary but also hold it's 50th Annual Coin Show.
And I decided what a perfect opportunity that would be for Omaha to host one of CSNS fall educational seminars. When I had CSNS President, Patti Finner on the phone, I brought the idea up to her and she heartily endorsed the idea and will present it to the board in July!
I can tell you, for all my disappointment a couple days ago, CSNS, as is my experience, came through as usual. It's funny how things make sense when you just find out some reasons and details, isn't it?
It's not a done deal by any means, but I am thrilled at learning all that CSNS can and will do, and has done to promote education of the hobby for member clubs in smaller cities and states who can't financially support a major convention but can a educational seminar in conjunction with a local or statewide show.
Thanks CSNS for trying so hard!

Omaha isn't such a bad venue for a coin show. There's lots of population to the east, north, and south. Most of the midwest has very motivated collectors it's just a matter of attracting them.
Omaha used to have good shows pretty regularly.
Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
Just be aware that the success of any educational symposium or seminars are highly contingent on the success of the coin shows that they are held in conjunction with.

<< <i>This would be a good time to arrange a private viewing of the Byron Reed Collection, perhaps the day before the show. >>
That's a great idea Andy!
No pressure!
Check out the Southern Gold Society
<< <i>Of course, now it's up to you to make sure that the seminar is a sell-out.
No pressure!
Congrats!

Sadly this is not currently possible, as the collection is not on display. The main reason for this disappointing turn of events is that the Durham Western Heritage Museum does not have a numismatist on staff due to lack of funds. The other curators have no clue about any of the coin collection. Therefore, no numismatic researchers can go there and examine any of the coins, let alone the casual viewing public.
When I was doing research for the new Bust Quarter book I tried to arrange an appointment to view the Byron Reed coins, but was unable to because of the reasons I just stated above.
Karen Frizzell, a curator there, was kind enough to shoot pictures of the 1823 & 1827 quarters for me though, and she did a wonderful job in helping me all she could.

Could local numismatists help on a part-time or volunteer basis? Between Lincoln and Omaha I would think there would be enough numismatic resources to help.

Can the Durham Western Heritage Museum and the Omaha Coin Club work together on this?

I've called, emailed and written letters to the museum offering all the resources and knowledge the club has to offer with no response so far. All I can do is keep offering.

CSNS is a great organization but it needs serious regime change.
