Another great trip to Alaska with Boiler78 - post a coin or token related to Alaska.

Had another great trip up to Alaska with Boiler78 2 weeks ago. You'll need to get a map out to know the locations. We flew from Seattle to Port Hardy on the north end of Vancouver Island. After clearing customs, we continued to Ketchikan. We chartered a fishing boat the next day and caought some red snapper and crabs - salmon weren't in yet. The cook at the local hotel cooked it up for us but neither of us remember much about the dinner. image

We then flew to Wrangell - skip this town if in the area - nothing to do there. Next stop was Sitka for a overnighter. Beautiful town but not much to do unless shopping for junk or fishing.

We then pushed on the Yakutat, a tiny town at the junction of the pan handle and the pan of Alaska. We must have seen 1000 bald eagles on the way, all standing on the beach. Fishing must be better in that region. Boiler spotted a grizzly with 3 cubs but I'll let him post those pictures. After a burger and gas, we pushed on to Homer, a long flight over open water. Weather pushed us down to 100 feet while getting around the south end of the Kenai peninsula but that lasted for only a few minutes before the weather was better. The Kenai area is glorious - beautifil bay surrounded by majestic mountains.

In Homer we had some wonderful food and played 18 holes at the local par 3 - the greens are worse than my back yard because of the permafrost and frost heaves but it was still fun, even though Boiler won the match play. image

We then pushed on to Fairbanks, a beautiful flight up Cook inlet, then along Mt. McKinley (hiding that day) and up the Tanana river. We had a chance to play a midnight sun round of golf - below is a picture of Boiler at 12:15AM tending the flag on 18. I would post my picture too but I look like a dork. image

After Boiler left, my family came up and we pushed north of the arctic circle to "camp" for 5 days - we rented a small cabin on Lake Selby, a beautiful lake at the base of the Brooks range. I hadn't been there for 30 years and it was as pretty as I remembered it. We caught lake trout and grayling, read books, paddled around the lake, hiked and slept in. All in all a great time.

I'm in the process of bringing the plane back to Seattle. I flew from Fairbanks to Juneau on Sunday and can't ever recall hitting my head so many times on the ceiling - the turbulance was really amazing while flying through Isabel pass and the length of the Copper river to Cordova, then Yakutat. From Yakutat to Juneau, the weather was great, blue skies over calm seas, glaciers and mountains everywhere, whales frolicking outside Juneau, etc.

All in all, hopefully NOT a once-in-a-life-time trip. I'm looking forward to getting the plane back in Seattle so AirplaneNut and I can do some flying together this summer. image
