Has anyone tried to assemble a set of 1965-67 SMS coins containing all the different appearances of

Given the wide range of looks these 15 coins (5 coins each year for 3 years) can have, assembling such a set would be quite an undertaking. However, if such a set was assembled, photographed and then published or otherwise distributed, it would be very informative, educational and eye appealing.

The different looks would include (but not be limited to):

1. a brilliant prooflike appearance;

2. an appearance similar to circulation strikes for the same years;

3. a Cameo or Deep Cameo prooflike appearance;

4. an appearance with frosted devices and bland non mirrored fields;

5. a granular "Matte" appearance on both the fields and devices;

6. toned examples of any of the above categories;

7. examples with recognized varieties (i.e. 1966 DDO half);

8. die clashed examples; and

9. off struck pieces.

The wide range of variety and the wide range of quality contained in the short lived SMS series is fascinating.

    I think that it would make a great academic study.

    2 Then , there will be articles in publications .

    3 Coin talk radio will surely pick up on this .

    4 Magazines will start to list all the varieties.

    5 Slabbing companies will scramble to order more
    plastic , and hire dedicated SMS graders .

    6 CAC will print an additional 200,000 stickers
    color coded for variety .

    7 Dansco will start a 2nd shift and produce a
    two volume album .

    8 Grey sheet will of course , add these listings,

    Yes, I have. I own several SMS halfs Dr.Wiles reported as URS-1, and a rotated die 65 half Coneca hasn't reported. I have decent examples of all the die states and finishes. The SMS coins are incredibly diverse.

    Kevin, is the old OCD kicking up?

    BTW, for someone who SAID just a little while ago that they weren't in the buying mode you sure seem to be moving out of that phase. image

    There are at least a couple more ways these are seen. image

    DHeath, if you are motivated please post some pics of your SMS coins.

    Skyman, my buying has dropped off dramtically, but it is not totally gone. This year I have probably spent a few hundred dollars on the hobby. Much less than prior years. I have also sold some coins. I expect that OCD is still lurking within.

    Cladking, what other kinds of SMS coins are you talking about?

    I'm told on good authority that I'm wrong on this and that these were just polished
    circulation coins but I've not seen any for exampination recently; Normal circulation
    die strikes on polished planchets.

    A few appear to be struck twice and are fully proof.

    You forgot to mention the finish that looks just like a proof (sans cameo).

    I have a few that if you covered up the date you'd swear were 1968-S proofs.

    Cladking - Are these from a particular mint? I belive that SF regularily sends surplus junk to Denver for their use and this includes not up to snuff proof planchets.

    These were struck at the San Francisco mint...I think the series would take off if the grading services would designate them as
    1966 (S) for example.

    These are SMS coins especially 1966 and especially quarters.

    They are pretty bad and they appeared to be struck on polished planchets from
    regular dies (possibly polished). CaptHenway has suggested that these are just
    polished coins intended to fool collectors.

    I've seen none for some time.
