I understand that CSNS said major dealers, PNG, and auction houses were all uninterested in a show in Omaha. I don't see that as a deal-breaker. Plenty of good shows don't have auctions or a PNG day.
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
Yeah, I understand the business angle of it, but it's too bad everything today is about the bottom line. Makes sense from a fiscal standpoint, though it does make much of your membership feel like second-class citizens.

<< <i>UPDATE: I received a call from CSNS President Patti Finner last night. Word must travel fast. Anyway, she explained to me that 2 months ago in Chicago CSNS polled the major dealers, PNG, and auction houses and no one had any interest in attending a show, or bidding on having an auction in Omaha. As Patti said, "It didn't take us long to discover that a convention in Omaha would be a financial disaster for Central States."
...
It still stinks and I think CSNS is in danger of letting "the tail wag the dog" by letting these groups set its agenda for show locations and leave the collecting base get the left overs. >>
I somewhat agree with the tail wagging the dog here. Just ask anyone in Sturgis, SD, how a well-promoted event can draw a big crowd and be successful. The poll results would have been different had the question been posed differently, for example, "The 2010 CSNS show will be in Omaha. 2+ million people within 3 hour drive, plenty of Warren Buffet money, cheap hotels, steak. You going?" The biggest problem I see is transportation into and out of Omaha. Teeny-weeny airport, probably requiring connections in Chicago, Denver, Dallas, or Minneapolis to reach.

So Mitch - Madame President of CSNS (aka Her Royal Highness) gave you her explaination. Interesting, and not in a good way. What she and people like her do is make nothing but excuses on top of excuses. So Omaha is not good enough for them - give me a break. They were in St. Louis in 2005 & 2007 - a similar-sized small city. Now I wonder who twisted their arms on that one? And the PNG - all they are is another elitist organization whose very existence should be questioned. Anyways, I will probably be getting nasty phone calls or e-mails or worse from CSNS officials because of my stinging criticism of CSNS and especially of my ongoing attacks at Madame President, who I feel is going to drag CSNS down the pipes (and a compelling reason why she should not be president of the ANA in 2009.) I do have one suggestion - how about a boycott of the CSNS shows? Probably not do-able, but a thought. But here is a much better one - in 2010, do to CSNS what the members of the ANA did with their board in 2007 - THROW THE BUMS OUT!!!!!!!!!! Maybe we'll get some new governors (myself included) who will give Omaha a chance. Now I will get off my soapbox.

I live in New England, and I would be far, far more likely to attend a CSNS show that was easy for me to get to.
Just for kicks I checked flights from Boston and there are no direct flights to Omaha. And while that wouldn't completely rule it out for me, it sure doesn't make it any more appealing.
My sense overall is that what you are calling 'disenfranchisement' is actually just a group trying to make a decision based on what is best for the majority of attendees and most likely to result in a successful show.
I understand that there are certain dealers who harbor strong, negative (and unwarranted) opinions about the PNG. Everybody has their personal right to form an opinion about the PNG and its dealers, but remember that through bourse fees and other financial requirements for setting up during PNG day the PNG organization and its dealers are underwriting a large portion of the financial expenses that come with arranging any CSNS convention. Without PNG Day, higher financial obligations would be passed on to all bourse table holders. This is why when the PNG talks, the CSNS listens.
Okay, Warren Buffet lives in Omaha, but I really don't expect him to be strolling up and down the aisles at any given coin show in the area throwing out C-notes. I'm fairly certain that he hasn't shown up at any Omaha coin show yet, and I seriously doubt he'll start doing so now. Consider my local area, the San Francisco Bay Area. The San Francisco Bay Area has the second highest number of resident billionaires (second to the New York metro area) in the U.S., yet you would be hard-pressed to spot any of them at the Santa Clara Expo, our local area's largest coin show.
Remember, regardless of how crappy any given American city may be, there are at least a few millionaires who are in proximity. The idiot brigade faction of coin dealers love the phrase "there's people with money in that city". There's at least a few people with some money in every city, even the ones you're too embarrassed about admitting you've been to.
Although I do not agree with Patti Finner and her policies all the time, I completely agree with her assessment regarding the problems with hosting a CSNS convention in Omaha. I won't take any negative shots at Omaha now, but let's just say that other cities in the general geographic area sound much more appealing.

WTCG - I agree with you but since you and some of the others on this forum are not of the Midwest, it seems that one fails to understand that there are other places in the Midwest to have a show other than Milwaukee, Chicago, Cincinatti, and St. Louis. Cities like Indianapolis, Louisville, Cleveland, Minneapolis-St Paul, Kansas City, and Omaha can be just as good a place to hold a show as any. It just needs the support of the local and state clubs plus some well-organized logistics. Snubbing the western half of the CSNS region is bad, but given some of the idiotic moves that the CSNS board has made in the past few years, this is no surprise. What the CSNS board has just basically told the Omaha Coin Club is that since your town is "in the sticks" that we won't hold a show there. I say that the Nebraska Numismatic Association/Omaha Coin Club should not, at their next big show, let CSNS have a table.

Similar to what ColonialCoinUnion stated, there are certain cities in the Central States jurisdiction that are much easier to access than others, especially when air travel is involved. Perhaps the Omaha Coin Club needs to contact the Omaha Convention and Visitors' Bureau and form a partnership in order to "sell" the notion of hosting a CSNS convention to the skeptics. It's certainly refreshing to sense the passion that some people have about Omaha, but I will admit that I am definitely one of the skeptics of the idea of the area hosting a spring CSNS convention.
I just conducted a quick search for airline flights, and it's a fact that Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Louis, Indianapolis, Minneapolis and most cities in Ohio are much easier to access than Omaha is. I'll give Omaha this...the place is much easier to get to than Fargo, ND.

Depends on where you are coming from...my search (from Oklahoma City) shows 1 stopover in Minneapolis--another unwanted city because people "can't get there". Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

I don't think that anyone is suggesting that you can't get to Omaha from other locations- just that it's more difficult to do so. And there's no getting around the fact that ease of access is going to be among the determining factors when people decide whether or not to attend an event. College World Series? Of course people come- it's not like they can just go to another one next week in a more conveniently located (for them) city- you know... like coin shows are?
What if we get the idea of having a CSNS convention in Omaha out of our minds and focus on having a private major coin convention in Omaha? As a compromise, have CSNS underwrite part of the convention and have some programs at the show. A private show promoter would tailor the convention to meet the demand of the national dealers and the local collector base. If it is determined that only 100 dealers will attend, then the right venue will be selected in order to make it a profitable venture. CSNS always has a presence at the Mid-America show in Chicago each year. That's the kind of show I envision coming to Omaha.
No sponsoring organization or coin dealer wants to lose money on a show. If you go to the US Census Bureau web site, you can download population and demographic information for the Omaha SMSA. Draw a circle with a radius of 200 miles – that is your total customer area. Consider that the summer ANA convention in Denver (pop 2.5 million) was barely successful. For a large regional show the Omaha and Kansas City (MO, KS) total is about 1.8 million within a 200 mile radius. Hopefully, you can begin to see that economically, Omaha, while a very nice small city, is too far removed from major populations to be economically viable for a regional show.
Possibly, CSNS could sponsor smaller, more local events in the western part of its territory. Has that option been discussed?

A couple of years ago a lot of people had complaints about how hard it was to get to Kansas City for the spring ANA money show. For me any city accessible on one tank of gas works great.
I am deeply disappointed at how this thread is being interpreted by some and then being hijacked to make personal attacks. My OP was not not sour grapes. Hard feelings. Or an axe to grind with CSNS. It was an expression of deep disappointment and some observations.
My family truly appreciates all that CSNS has done for us and means to us. It is from that affection that my hurt came at our club's rejection as a major convention site. I don't think that is too hard to understand.
Other member's personal vendetta's, gripes, beefs, attacks, etc. with CSNS do not reflect my feelings in any way. And I hope, that other member's comments are not interpreted as mine, as they certainly are not. And I truly apologize if they were interpeted that way. That was not my intent.
CSNS means the world to our family on a number of different levels. As I said earlier, it opened the door of numismatics to our family. We have friends and acquaintaces at CSNS and the last thing I wanted to do was offend or malign any of them or CSNS.
I was simply trying to express my disappointment.
