Ebay: No longer required to have slab photos

So when did they change this?
Dear eBay Member,

Thank you for writing eBay in regard to our policies concering the sale
of coins.

After listening to our sellers and their suggestions, we have made the
decision that not all certified coins are required to show a front and
back image. Certified coins with a date of 1980 or later are now not
required to show images at all. Certified coins with a date of 1979 or
earlier will still be required to show front and back images.

We thank you in advance for your cooperation, and wish you luck with
your future eBay transactions.

Sincerely,
Akira

That was changed a couple months ago to accomodate high volume moderns sellers. Makes sense.

So are the front and back slab photos still requried for pre-1980 coins, or will images of the coin itself suffice?

Yes, still a requirement for pre 1980.

Makes sense? I don't know any high volume dealers in moderns that believe it makes sense to sell any coin without "any" photos? Who does that?

So, the age old question of the dividing line between modern and classic has been answered. By Ebay. image

Speaking of pics, check out this pic.

Does he really expect to get bids, starting at $600, with a microscopic pic?

This is the actual pic from the auction, I just don't get it.

Yes, it makes sense. Plenty of high volume dealers run dutch auctions for multiples of the same grade/same coin. Under the old requirement they had to have a picture of EVERY coin. That didn't make sense.

The only thing though with spotting etc. such a problem these days if you sell a modern coin with a generic stock photo the buyer still really does not know what they are getting.

    Makes sense.
Everything from 1980 to date is only pocket change anyway.

I'm talking about not using any photos, not those using stock photos.

I always offer to send photos of the actual coins before purchase or shipment. About once a quarter someone takes me up on this. For high value Presidential coins I take a photo of the acutal coin for sale and provide closeups of the actual coin. For MS70 or PR70 buffalos, PCGS grades so tight that the coins are spectacular and I have never had anyone unhappy that the coin wasn't what they were expecting. I will always take a return or an exchange on a coin that a buyer doesn't agree with the grade of doesn't like the eye appeal (usually location of minor hits). But generally customers are very happy (based on feedback). Thanks for the opportunity to explain my customer service plan on these modern coins. --Jerry

PS Spotting would be a special case. I wouldn't sell a coin with milkspots wtihout mentioning it in the auction and would always replace a milkspotted coin that I inadvertantly sold without noting them.

The new policy specifies that the seller doesn't have to provide photos, it doesn't say they can't provide photos. image

Normally I agree. But as long as there's a return policy, one PCGS PF-69 DCAM 2006 SAE pretty much looks like any other, with a few mostly minor exceptions. That's not as true for an MS-63 Seated half, for example. If someone has 1,000 of these for sale, it's just not worth imaging 1,000 of these separately. It may be better for that seller to not place a picture, accept returns and possibly charge slightly less than to take the time to image 1,000 coins and the time/expense of listing them separately.
