More second chance offers reflection of shill bidding?

Just received another second chance offer, third one since the new hidden bidder policy on ebay.
This offer came the next the day after listing closed. I made minimum bid, was outbid by a dollar.
The winner has almost 600 feed back at 100%, makes me wonder why that only a few hours after listing closed that I am made a second chance offer on coin.

It seems more than odd that within the last weeks I have had as many second chance offers than in the past year. Is there more shill bidding taking place now? This fear of shilling has kept me from making more than minimum bids on some listings.

Anyone else seeing more second chance offers since the new hidden bidder policy?

Tell the seller you will buy it for the price it would have been if the winning bidder had not bid.

I have dont that once or twice myself. That should be the standard format but would cut in to ebay's margin.

If the second chance offers are because the bidders decided not to pay, I think it more likely it's a function of a tough economy.

It could also be that with eBay's new feedback policy, more bidders feel they can just get buyer's remorse and not complete the sale -- after all, the seller can't neg them for it now. As a result, more sellers might resort to second chance offers.

As others mentioned, if I were still interested I'd counter with one increment above the bid below mine.

I don't know what the item in question was, but if the seller had multiples, it wouldn't be unreasonable to offer one to the second place bidder at his max bid.

The seller would not be able to complete the transaction through the second chance offer feature. eBay has it set up so it has to be completed at the bid.

Second chance offers are not all bad. The seller has the benefit of selling more at no listing fees, just a price realized fee.
I have bought many 2nd chance offers on eBay and many are forum members.

ie: Datentype, Tazmic & Coinfame to name a few.....

There are simply more deadbeats winning auctions and refusing to pay, since the sellers can no longer leave
    negative feedback.

Shill bids and bidding rings have always been a factor in live auctions, it's part of the game theory and has even been studied as such. If you are afraid of bidding more than the minimum for "fear of shilling" you will seldom win anything worthwhile. Just bid a reasonable fair price for the items you want and you would will win many nice items.
