Can excessive die polish hurt a coins grade?

  If it hurts the eye appeal then that might be translated to a lower grade. However, many high grade Mercs have substantial die polish.

  I believe it should. I've seen some 1866 unc quarters with really ugly die polish, IMHO.

  I had a high grade steel cent that had a wavy field in the obverse, all die polish. I don't thing they dinged the grade at all as I think it was accurate ignoring the polish.

  Excessive die polish may impair the luster of the coin struck from the die, so yes.
