I won this piece on Teletrade and although it is incredibly toned -it was over 400$ !
Do I have a screw loose ? Can this very common coin be found with superb toning in hi grade with a little searching ?
..... or did I snag a masterpiece where cost is of no concern because of the " look " ??
Whats up with this particular Type ; I means , can anyone give me the history of it and the bigger Peso ........

The 1947 peso and 50-centavo coins commemorate the liberation of the Philippines from the Japanese by General Douglas MacArthur. The designer was Laura Gardin Fraser, whose initials appear under the bust of MacArthur. Both coins were weakly struck in low relief at the San Francisco mint. They were the first coins struck for the new republic, and that one is a beautiful example.
I wanted the NGC piece that T.T had several months back but was scared to go as high as that one went for .......
and as pretty as that NGC one looked - this one MUST blow the doors off of of it . I would be hard pressed to imagine something more pleasing or satisfying
in hand then gazing at this PCGS one .
I am surprised to find out it was in previous auctions ; as I watch the non U.S lots each week closely .
It is in a flawless brand new holder and it really has a million dollar ..errr .....a million peso look to it
I came real close to buying it myself. Sounds like now I should have

i searched the web but found little about them .........
A famous U.S. General and a first issue for a new Country sound like a winning combination to me ; but overall many claim
the coins are dirt common .

i love Mexican too , ............as for new pix ; i suck real bad at photo's - I tried , believe me
there are not many graded by PCGS...........
I gotta wonder , was that General remembered in history as a hero - or was he responsible for a hellova lot of people getting the short end of the stick when he scooted out of the Philippines ?

U.S. Type Set
One of the most decorated soldiers in the history of the United States military, MacArthur became famous for both losing and retaking the Philippines During World War II. He was appointed Supreme Allied Commander in the South Pacific Area and led a series of military victories by Allied forces in the theatre. After Imperial Japan surrendered to the Allies in 1945, MacArthur became the Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers , rebuilding Japan during the Allied occupation. During the Korean War, MacArthur was removed from command for insubordination to U.S. President Truman, causing a national controversy.
American forces under MacArthur's command took back the Philippines in October 1944, fulfilling MacArthur's vow to return to the Philippines and consolidating their hold on the archipelago after heavy fighting. In September 1945 MacArthur received the Japanese surrender which ended World War II.
He was awarded and received the Medal of Honor for his leadership in the Southwest Pacific Theater. Philippine President Sergio Osmena also decorated him with the Philippines' highest military award, the Medal of Valor.
Issued in honor of his contribution to Philippine history, the Central Bank of the Philippines released (2) diffrent Commemorative Coins in 1949.

Were it a Franklin I would have been in my element and would know far better it's worth .
But I gambled and took an ill advised shot ( not the logical way to bid ) ; this time i guess I won ......... but Again -I was out of my element and bid on impulse
rather then on research
and facts : however , the toning on this MS-66 PCGS coin is breathtaking and it's world class color .
So i`m pleading temporary insanity .

Was issued as a commem. Most were saved; few circulated. Usually found in high grades and white with a low relief weak strike. Can be bought raw for around $10 in BU condition. Certified examples go for a bit more. $30 in 63 and up to $60 in 65. Few are colorfully toned like yours and PCGS POP is 9/0. The Peso is generally worth a bit more with a 66 POP of 1/0.
Peso in PCGS 66 that went for over a cool $ 700 . 00 a few months ago on Teletrade !

I was unable to locate info in the 2009 Redbook.
Picked it up this morning for a whopping $15, appears to be in the 64 range, strike looks weak to me.
As others have pointed out most have a lame strike.

I have learned the hard way that it is better to stretch a little for great looking coins than try to penny pinch on something so, so. I am much happier holding the coins in my collection that I was patient for.

You won't find it in the Red Book because it is a Philippine issue, not a U.S. one.

Interesting. Nice coin, although I wouldn't have a clue as to the value. I used to have some of the smaller denominations from 1944-1945, and I've always been a bit intrigued. It makes sense that the 1947 was not in Redbook. Wasn't the Phillipines Independence in 1946 or so?

After establishing a base of operations on Leyte, American armed forces built-up and proceeded to invade Mindoro against relatively light opposition and ultimately landed on Luzon on January 9th, 1945. Secondary landings were carried out to prevent the main Japanese forces from retreating to more defensible positions such as Bataan. By July 5th General MacArthur declared the Philippines liberated. However, some remote areas remained under Japanese control until the end of the war.
