<< <i>Jerry is right. While everybody has been screaming bloody murder about the feedback policy change, the fee increase got lost in the shuffle. That said, eBay is still a hell of a lot cheaper than the overhead of a B&M store and produces a magnitude more eyeballs than any other venue. Nothing out there is even close.

    I agree 100%.
Exposure through eBay is one of the most affordable means of advertising in the universe.

<< <i>I know last month Russ and I both scored the 15% discount. This month someone dinged me with a 1 on shipping costs and I ended up with a 4.7 stars for shipping and dropped to a 5% discount. I know Russ got dinged on shipping also and lost his 15% and got 5%.

The buyer that dinged me bought a $500 medal, I charged $3.50 shipping (cost me $2.97) and $8.15 for insurance (with the rate increase I lost money), and he still said my shipping was way overpriced. Geeze! >>

Seems like eBay is ignorant of ignorant buyer's! Especially where insurance is involved.

Me? I would not mind paying the insurance on a $500 item provided the profit margin could absorb it but many times, this just does not happen.
It's pointless to whine about how much you lost on some particular sale such as a mint set with $3.82 face selling for $1.75 as this stuff happens but when you throw in the 8.75% FVF coupled with the listing fee's and 3% paypal, it really hurts.

Thats the last time I'll start a mint set auction at .99!

Perhaps if eBay adjusted their pricing scales it would be more beneficial but that's not going to happen. As for comparing eBay to a B & M? That's comparing apples to oranges since the B & M more than likely has line of credit backing based on past sales.

<< <i>Ok so if ebay is reasonable for coins. Is it reasonable for a dealer to make as much as ebay? Maybe even more? So if the dealer makes 15% and ebay make 15% then the buy/sell spread goes to 30%. >>

Except that eBay isn't making 15%. Not sure where that number comes from, but it is not that high. In my case, for example, it's about half that with eBay and PayPal fees combined.

Russ, the fee's to list an item in an eBay store start at .01 cents but the final value fee is a flat 12%.

Add the Paypal fee's at 3% and you end up with 15%.

<< <i>Actually Russ, your combined PP and E-Bay fees are 0%, unless you are auctioning something of yours. You charge the fees back to the consignee correct? >>

True, but not relevant to the discussion. The discussion is what eBay and PayPal are actually charging, and the reality is that they are not charging the numbers that are being used in this thread.

    Maybe I missed something here.

    Final Value Fees
    Price
    Final Value Fee

    Item not sold No Fee

    $1.00 - $25.00 12.00% of the closing price

    $25.01 - $100.00 12.00% of the initial $25.00 ($3.00), plus 8.00% of the remaining closing value balance

    $100.01 - $1,000.00 12.00% of the initial $25.00 ($3.00), plus 8.00% of the initial $25.01 – $100.00 ($6.00), plus 4.00% of the remaining closing value balance $100.01 – $1,000.00

    Over $1,000.01 12.00% of the initial $25.00 ($3.00), plus 8.00% of the initial $25.01 – $100.00 ($6.00), plus 4.00% of the initial $100.01 – $1,000.00 ($36.00), plus 2.00% of the remaining closing value balance ($1,000.01-closing value)

Note: As a Store seller, you can earn a Store Referral Credit and save 75% off Final Value Fees for Store Inventory listings when you drive traffic to your Store!

I have no idea what that last statement means.

Using store format is a choice made by the seller.

This is true but it also avoids the $1.75 FV for a mint set. You can only do that so many times before you start questioning your sanity.

I do sell at losses when its time to move stuff off the shelf but that;s also by choice and has nothing to do with the fee structure that eBay has implemented. remember aslo, that this wasn't a half a percent or full percent increase, this was a flat 3.75% increase for auction items from the git go. Store inventory FV only jumped 2% but thats 2% less profit for me.
