Today is the anniversary of Black Tuesday -- post a Byzantine coin

555 years since the fall of Constantinople, May 29, 1453. image

(I don't have any Byzantine coins, but I'd like to see some)

I only have one and it's a dark corroded POS with no pictures image

I'd love to be able to time travel and see some of the places I have coins from in their day....

I paid $100 for the Sear book on Byzantine coins, but I have never collected them. I guess I am a sucker for books.image

Byzantine coins generally aren't as "pretty" as ancients or moderns, and don't scan or photograph well.

Here's my only pic on file of any of the coins in my small Byzantine collection:

    image

It's a greyscale scan of a late Byzantine aspron trachy of emperor Manuel I, 1143-1180 AD. The coin is somewhat greener than this in real life. image

I wish I had been able to get around to updating the website before this thread. I've got some beautiful bronzes that would look pretty good here. image
