I hope you have good luck.

I would not feel comfortable paying $100 for the coin based on that seller's pictures or the fact that you appear to be that seller's biggest dollar item sold for this year.

Then again you may have scored big! If you feel it not as described you can take advantage of the return period.

Good luck. Please keep us posted.

If the coin has no spots on it, suggest he clean his scanner.
  • Options
Looks like there's some nasty spotting on it.

Hopefully it can be treated, but if not, then the coin is not very attractive IMO.

I would take the 100 dollar gamble. Show me another 1936 price with in 3 times the money. Seller says no white spots. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. I just sold a 36 proof 10 days ago for almost 600 dollars.

wooo. this is going to be an interesting thread. if the seller is
actually describing it accurately we may have a nice rip but i simply
cannot get past those scans... it appears to have spot issues.

please update when ready! dont tinker with the coin first though ;-)

A DEEP RED WITH ONLY A FEW CARBON MARKS TO MAR THE SURFACES. A CLEAN PIECE TO SATISFY THE DISCRIMINATING COLLECTOR THAT DOES NOT WANT TO SPEND $1200 FOR A PROOF 65

Can, a few carbon spots and a clean piece be used to describe the same coin?

    I know it's '37 but I picked up this PCGS PR64RB for $140:

With the 7 day return option, I would have picked up that '36 for $100 if I'd seen it.

Make no mistake, that coin does have spotting which may not be readily visible to the naked eye but under a good loupe, the spotting will definitely show.
A scanner is an excellent instrument in this respect in that when a transluscent spot occurs on a mirrored surface, the scanning light does not reflect back correctly to the scanner which is what makes these spots show up.

I have Silver Eagles that appear spot free until they hit the scanner which reveals every inconsistency in the mirror finish.

    image

The eagle above is a good example in that with a photograph, these spots do not readily show up. The scanner tells a much different tale.

    Bets of luck.

I like to see real photos of the Lincoln in question. My gut tells me that he knows what it's worth, especially since he references a $1200 price tag in PR65. I think you will do fine value wise, but I also think it's going to be butt ugly.

Tranlucent does not mean invisible it means that light can be transmitted through it. This means that the spots are there, they are simply not readily noticeable.

I'm nervous for you....The last time I got jipped on Ebay was last year, an impulse bid on a raw "proof" Indian. The coin arrived with paint chipping off - Luckily I claimed $200 (slightly under the value) from Paypal and the seller was history.

If you didn't read a word I've said, heed this warning: BEWARE of raw coins on ebay, unless high quality pics are provided, and the seller appears to have sold similar style and value with a good satisfaction record.
Also BEWARE when a seller says subtle things to convince you to buy something, "this coin could be worth $1200" (yet I'm going to sell it for $100).

I wish you luck, my friend, unfortunately my guts tell me I think you may need it this time.

"Proof Uncirculated?" Not sure what that means. What we can see of the coin is ugly. No way a scanner is hiding not only the beauty of the coin, but enough of it to cancel out the ugly we can see. I hope I'm wrong, but "I've got a bad feeling about this."
  • Options
I saw it an almost made a bid on it...The spots, even though he dismissed them, look too real for me.....I'll bet they are there, and the scanner enhanced them. I'll just save a little longer for a slabbed one,

Sorry, but a little gambling now and then is good for the coin collecting soul. Its worth a try IMHO. I hope it works. The 1936 is just too rare to let it go by. The coin has more than doubled in value in the last three years. Its not recognized or apprciated as a scarce proof. But as long as those MPL's keep going up, the 36 will be dragged up by the coat tails. I will not even begin to discuss the satin. Keep us posted no matter how it turns out.

This takes more stones than I have. I might gamble with $10 or $20 or even $50, but when you start hitting three figures it's a bit more of a gamble than my finances are willing to take. Best of luck, though!

This happens all the time and IMO is nothing to be alarmed about.

Many folks refer to proof and uncirculated coins synonomously with out ever knowing that they are two completely different manufacturing processes.

The term "uncirculated" means more than just the manufacturing process as it also is commonly related to mean that a coin did not circulate.

At $100, there's not much downside although calling the coin "attractive" may be a stretch. It's a good gamble.

I did not see anyone ask if it was really a proof. I don't know the indicators are but I would be suspect seeing a raw proof on e-bay.

I agree and would also be a bit suspect. However, the coin does have the look of a proof despite the piss poor image.

True, but with an image this "piss-poor" it's not that hard to heavily polish a regular old choice AU business strike and pass it off as a proof. One can't really tell much about the surfaces or even if the details are consistent with a proof strike.
