  The 1855 "Knob on Ear" variety Large Cent was one of Jules Reiver's favorites. He once showed me a die progression set, with as many as thirty different die states, each one progressively more pronounced than the previous. The latest die states that he had exhibited a huge mound (cud) on the ear, prompting him to comment "They wouldn't have stacked too well, would they?".

  A cud is a die break that involves the shank of the die, therefore this is not a cud, but it is cool anyway.

  If, by your definition, a cud only involved the 'shank' of a die, how would a cud ever appear on a coin?

  Your coin shows a lump large enough to warrant the label "internal die break" or "interior die break". Basically it's a die chip on steroids.
  
  A cud is a die break that carries away the rim gutter and at least a little bit of the field portion of the die, along with the adjacent part of the die neck (shank).
