1859D Liberty Head $5.

I was at a local b&m yesterday and saw a PCGS 1859 Large D $5 Liberty Head. XF 40. Can anyone give me the pop on this coin and a aprox. value. Thanks. Bob

About 3k value. No idea on the pcgs pops.
    Pretty rare coin though.

large D has a pop of two coins: the one you saw and an AU-58

    I found this on Heritage

"1859-D $5 Large D AU55 PCGS. CAC. Variety 37-EE. The Large D reverse is much rarer than its Medium D counterpart, although some examples, such as the present piece, are incorrectly designated as the Medium D variety by PCGS. " image

Couple of comments and supportive facts...

    1. The discovery coin for the "Large D" variety is the Bass II: 1117 coin. It was ex-Eliasberg and has appeared in auction twice in the last five years. Both times, I tried to buy it for the strong money for the common variety, and both times I lost out. It recently sold for a significant premium, and I am not sure whether it was because it is a very nice, original coin (it is), the variety, the Eliasberg pedigree, or all of the above.

    2. PCGS has just started recognizing these mintmark varieties on the slabs, and my guess is that there could be many unattributed large Ds in holders.

    3. There are a small group of people who collect Dahlonega by date and even a smaller group (if any) who collect by variety. Be careful paying a significant premium for a variety in this series.

    4. A nice original PCGS XF-40 Dahlonega $5 will sell for $2500 retail and can often be acquired for between $2000 and $2400. There are very few of these coins on the market at any one time.

  • Thanks for thr input. Bob
