Sorry NGC, but I just like PCGS more!

It's not the differences in grading, the service, the people... It's the holder! Compared to the NGC holder, I'm in love with the PCGS holder. The NGC holder is just a brick of white. It's aesthetically unappealing, and just not good IMO. The PCGS holder is superior (again IMO).

i guess i agree. I remember hearing somewhere that a dealer thought if NGC removed the white insert they would have better sales.

I find it interesting you say nothing about a coin, just the plastic surrounding it. For aesthetic reasons or whatever, I prefer the better coin and couldn't care less about a chunk of plastic.

  • Well, the thread wasn't about coins - it was about grading services.

However, depending on the coin, I would try to find one in a PCGS holder as opposed to a NGC holder. If it's a super eye-appealing coin, or a rare coin, I wouldn't care about the holder. But if it's a 38D MS65 Buffalo Nickel, give me PCGS any day.

  • Well, I have to agree about the holder. Actually, ANACS holders are the most attractive IMO. The white insert is just plain wrong.

Holder can and does impact the presentation of the coin. Just as paintings have their frames selected so as not to detract from the painting. A holder can detract from the coin. Agree PCGS is better as it is less detracting from the coin, however even PCGS can use some work on the labeling inserts from that perspective.

This of course is a secondary consideration. The quality of the grading exceeds the looks of the holder.

I do agree with you on this. I have been trying harder to buy PCGS over NGC coins.

True enough, but as I've pointed out before, aesthetically speaking, NGC couldn't design a nice-looking slab to save their lives.

I have had some nice.. not great coins slabbed across the street, I don't own any great coins yet, anyway I did really start to notice how "whitewashed" looking there slabs are a couple weeks ago when I had a 1910 MPL done........it killed the coin...it looks like its in a dark closet because no light can get to it...........I do like the PCGS holders, always have, also, I like the newer ANACS holders..(just don't like whats in um most of the time).

NGC needs to let some light hit the coin......suspend the coin in a clear material...JMO

I also can't stand the way a coin looks in an NGC holder. When I buy a coin in one I just cross it to PCGS. Since I only collect Very high end pieces they always cross without a problem.

My preference of PCGS is based on the holder. Since I have a 100% cross rate, it is hard to speak towards the grading aspect of the two.

All discussion of the coin aside (afterall this is a plastics forum)

I don't like the plastic that NGC uses. It's not completely clear, it seems pimply and interferes with close examination of the coin on the inside (as if the coin on the inside were important).

I like the old small ANACS slabs the most, but of current product, PCGS has a reasonably good piece of plastic.

PCGS only allows PCGS plastic in their registry sets there by requiring you to purchase PCGS plastic and NGC plastic will only store in an NGC box thereby requiring you to purchase NGC boxes to store your NGC and PCGS coins.

Seems like a fair deal to me.

Now the same can't be said for NGC as the ribbed edge on their holder causes calluses! image

  • As always buy the coin not the holder, if the coin is properly graded then cross it over to PCGS.

With that said Eye Appeal has a lot to do with the value of a coin, and the holder does affect the overall eye appeal.

So try this at the next show or at home. Take a PCGS Morgan and a NGC Morgan. Hold them side by side for comparison and the Morgan in the NGC holder actually looks a bit smaller. Probably because of the solid white insert. White make things look bigger, which in turn makes the Morgan look smaller. The NGC insert just looks thicker.

I would be interested if anyone else sees the same difference.

I think NGC gets a bad rap with regards to grading. I've seen plenty of overgraded coins in PCGS plastic to know that the two companies are generally equal to one another. However, I've stated for years that I prefer PCGS for the sole reason that their slabs simply look better which like it or not presents the coin better as well. For copper and gold, the white inserts are okay. But for silver (or nickel), I much prefer the transparent slabs offered by PCGS.

May I inquire what it is you are doing with your slabs?

I like the coin inside the plastic.
That said, I prefer the look of PCGS plastic but would put up with the NGC plastic if I liked the coin more.
