for you dime guys; killer ANA 'Ed Price' sale coming up!

Just noticed in the recent Numismatic News that a gentleman by the name of Ed Price has consigned his monster dimes to Heritage for the Baltimore ANA. This, along with some really nice early US gold, should be something to see!

(note: page 21-23 in NN, and probably up on Heritage's website too)

Last night I attended a meeting of the NJ Numismatic Society of which I am a member... another member brought in nice glossy "handouts" picturing this collection...as Ed Price is also a member of this group (he was not present for the meeting)...

All I can say is ... WOW... this is one impressive collection... a number of R-5's and 6's and even a few R-7's and R-8's... including a few discovery coins...beautifully original and many nicely toned...

I will not be able to view this collection in person but based on the pics, it would be a true numismatic pleasure to be able to do so...

Apparently he chose these two sets because of the shared reverse dies...

Only one of each complete set by variety has ever been assembled...one now resides in a museum...

This, however is the first complete assembled set that includes both coin types that share the same reverse dies...

...and as a side note to Andy and Aki... I don't think Ed put this together in a year...

(edited to add that the secretary of the NJ Numismatic Society just informed me that Ed WAS a member... but is not at this time...either way...the collection is awesome!!!)

This is the early US coin set that I admire the most. The draped bust HE dimes and $2.50 that share working dies are unique among US coin series (although halves and $10's shared working hubs). The set includes the only 1796 JR-7 dime known, making it the only complete early dime set ever formed.

And remember that this is the very same collector who, in recent years, also assembled the highest grade and most complete collection of early United States half dimes (1792-1805) ever assembled, including two discovery coins, and both the finest known and second finest known 1802 half dimes. Ed is perhaps the most methodical, precise, and detail oriented numismatist I have ever known, and a gentleman to boot. Makes you wonder what he will tackle next.

A very admirable set and collector indeed. While I do not know him personally, I have long admired his collecting style and his attention to detail.

He follows the tradition of wonderful dime collectors which included Allen Lovejoy.

I don't even collect dimes, or see myself taking it up. I do however enjoy looking at beautiful coins, and his collection is stellar! I can see why you guys hold him in such high regard.
