Wow, that is the wierdest thing. I guess I should've known this sort of printing error is possible but I never thought I'd see one in the wild. Even if it won't pay off your mortgage it sure is an interesting card!

I don't get it. The one on the left just looks like it was left out in the sun too long--sort of how McGwire looks these days.

Have not seen any before. I imagine all star cards, such as that one, would do well on ebay.

Could you scan the other side of the card as well?

I was actually being serious, the card on the left simply looks sun faded. What is "reverse coating", anyway?
  • BunchOBullBunchOBull Posts: 6,188 ✭✭✭
So the glossy coating was applied to the back of the card rather than the front?

Regular Donruss cards were never coated. Topps Tiffiany's maybe but 1988 Donruss nah..............

The glossy side is on the back and the matte side is on the front; that's the key difference.

I have a similar Paul Molitor Fleer card from 1990 or so. Kind of neat but I'd imagine nothing valuable.
  • The sheet was probaly fed into the printer upside down, so every card on that sheet should have the same error.

Exactly. I don't think 80's Donruss cards ever had an aqueous coating... I think it MUST be that the sheet was fed upside down.

Are you sure it isn't counterfeit? Those 88 Donruss McGwires are freakin hot!

Nice offering. The cards are real if like the McGwire above and the 88 Donruss does have a light coat of gloss. If they didn't gloss it after wards you could clearly see the different areas of ink applied raised from the paper, due to the paper having a little gloss before being printed, and the ink applied not having a gloss.

Is there a "." after the INC on the one on the right? I haven't seen an INC vs INC. variation for 1988 before. The "." was used by Donruss in later years to depict wax vs factory cards. From the scan, it looked like there wasn't a "." on the one on the right. Is that the case?

Regardless I haven't ever seen this either and I've been collecting McGwire cards since '87!
