can this be right?

This is on e-bay for close to $200-I inquired about the silver splotches and they said that it was on the coin and graded that way-i thought it might be a camera flash reflection--would you call this a "69" grade ???and how can NGC grade this so high?

    turned color in the holder?

Maybe it's been near a lot of chemicals.

I would assume something is wrong here and avoid this product altogether. No, I don't see how NGC would grade a splotched coin...if there is a problem, they have NCS to turn to.

    Fake slab?

Cracked slab with coin replaced and resealed?

Violating the 'buy the coin and not the slab' rule?

[edit] Maybe it was around LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of horrible chemicals?!? Yikes! Vapors that can strip copper or plate metal? Hard to imagine. The gasses that can do this are available in the Bay Area...used for circuit manufacture...and these gasses tend to be highly poisonous and spontaneously combustive.

I doubt it's fake. Any scammer would find a better coin to put in their fake. --Jerry

Hmmmm? Interesting post. I have several Lincoln's that exhibit similar
silver splotches. Both Obv and Rev, too. All PCGS. All high grades.
Frankly, I do not recall them having any silver spots when I purchased/
certified them. It was only after I happened to look thru several blue
boxes of both proof and MS cents, that I noticed the anomaly.
I would be interested to hear from anyone who can explain the
    strange toning!

i never heard of putty being used on copper.... but i am open
to learning if that is the case.

i just think there is another poster who has seen this anomoly
and obviously they did not putty their own coins... and they
    were already slabbed.

Maybe the NGC grader was just blurry eyed from seeing too many coins that day?
