Bill: My comment pertains to Gold, silver & platinum - there has been absolutely no difference I have seen. FS pops are NOT safe in ANY metal regardless of whether the "deadline has run". I am not sure my (fair) comment is really subject to much debate - is it?

By virtue of the deadline they are a fraction of the total mintage however. Also unlike other First StikeSM populations, there is no guarantee (and more likely not) a sealed box would even contain the 08/07 variety and out the ones that do, less than 15% on average would grade at MS70.

I was assuming you were stating that like the 2006 W Buff FS's, these ASE coins could appear later in FS-eligible Mint Boxes at PCGS for grading, long after the normal FS submittal/grading cycle and that could potentially inflate the POP.
With any other coin I would agree!
I was thinking strictly that with all of the spotting problems, anyone holding numbers of raw, unopened Silver (not vacuumed packed) was tantamount to committing suicide, IMHO.
Unless of course, climate-controlled storage can take the place of Foodsaver-type sealing. I am not aware of any facility that can assure that.

Also keep in mind the 2006-W Buffalo was one of the most anicipated releases from the Mint being the first 24KT gold coin from the Mint that contributed to the hoarding, with 100,000 units sold in just 10 days. Even so the First StrikeSM population has grown ~200 PR70 since then. An inaignificant amount compared to the volume of units sold. Conversley the 08/07 variety was not discovered until less than two weeks before the deadline, a fact that will contribute significantly to the potential poulation especially in MS70.

If I were holding unopened silver then I would tape together broken down Intercept Shield boxes, wrap the silver box, put it in a vacuum bag and then seal it in another box with a lot of humidity absorbing bags. It'll keep just fine.
<< <i> knock on wood but I have about 300 ASE's with no one spot. All I can say is it is the dry air in the dessert. I don't do anyting special just stored in the normal boxes. ??? >>
It must be an environment thing. I live in Oregon, not dry, in the winter, and own several hundred SAE's, all the way back to 1986 and I don't have a single one with spots.
perfect coin? last year at this time had the first ms70 hit the market? So this one is perfect and not worth 1300+..a small change in the U that isnt there?? LOL Gullible people....
<< <i>I'm going to weigh in to say that this is a very short frenzy that will end in a few weeks tops. The pops are way to high on the 70FS but there is also a buying frenzy going on so I do not blame sellers one bit. Having been a close to the silver eagles for a long time, I can say that while this represents the biggest ASE story, the pops will end up killing this. Pop 52,000+.
$450-$500. IMO >>
How do you come up with 52,000 plus, crystal ball or are you watching too much Medium. The mint already said 47,000 max so unless you are minting them in the basement please back up your facts. >>
LIke other mint products ,look for a fast run up for the 2008/7 eagles , a short term dip and a final run up before declining... ala 2006 gold and silver Anniv sets , the 2006 Gold Buffalo 1st strike PCGS s
Was just watching Shop Online NBC and they claim only 15,000 2008 W’s made it out the door and the variety/error was caught at the beginning of the second shift. As some have stated the number of auctions currently available on eBay does not match a release a 47,000 coins. Would be curious to hear your thoughts?
I would not trust those guys as far as I could toss them, I have heard some seriously outlandish bull$hite frothing forward from their gullets of BS. But they may actually be correct this time from what I am seeing. As a seasoned dealer in many things new from the mint the selling activity does not reflect an outstanding POP of 47K, IMO. I do not believe that the mint "caught it' on a shift but realized it after CW contacted them. The mint then opened up boxes of 100 and pulled the bulk out. That is why people like myself got boxes of 100 that had been slit open and given a sharpie initial of "LW". They did not go through the smaller pre allocated boxes of 10 so some still slipped out (how I got 85/90) from boxes of ten.
If these were in flippers hands you could expect to see them on eBay. However, they're not. They were sold to collectors and then the variety was discovered. Many of these collectors still haven't heard about the variety. Many of those that have haven't bothered to look. Most of those that did look and found a '07 reverse were overjoyed to have it in their collection and are happy to keep it. It's not going on eBay. Trying to estimate population on these based on eBay volume is ludicrous. Given the way these were distributed only a tiny percentage will ever see eBay.

Did you know the word "gullible" isn't even on the dictionary?
That's what some guy named Moy at the mint said anyway...

Number of coins dropping further!
If they had 47K out, this would not be happening.
