Please add a error coin, or highly valued modern coin to the list.

It is in the best interest of the mint to make error coins.
It keeps the hobby alive, and keeps interest in coins, and there values.

Name a coin that qualifies as a modern rarity, or are scarce in numbers.
A die variety.. Low low mintages, coins that are highly marketable/ profitable/ notable mentions etc...

Such as the..

Mainly looking for variates, and low mintage coins with higher values. The 2001 silver proof set did well...

    1995 Lincoln DDO.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

  • The 1995 W silver eagle..
    1995-W American Silver Eagle

1995-W American Silver Eagle is the key date for the series. This coin had a mintage of only 30,195 and is the most notable modern key date coin. The low mintage was due to the fact that the coin was only issued as part of the expensive 1995 Gold Eagle Proof Set. Silver Eagles are one of the most popular modern series, making these coins very desirable.

    Wisconsin Extra Leaf Quarters

Unlike the MN quarters, that are actually just nothing more than commonly explained doubled die, the WI extra leaf quarters have a real whodunnit story behind it. It has now been proven that someone at the Mint made these varieties on purpose by striking the softened dies with a hammer and a curved tool! How cool is that!

  • For very scarce modern very obvious die varieties, I nominate the 1971 D and 1972 D Type B quarters.
Each one seems to be a one die variety with a mintage less than 100,000 each.
The 1956 - 1964 circulation strike B's seem to be catching on in popularity at the moment.
It seems to be imposssible to buy any of the clad ones.
For all I know it might be equally tough to sell one since they are so little known.

What about the Madison "weak" dollars with a total of 34 coins between 2 mints and 2 sides (A&B) and these coins are looking like one of the rariest of ALL the President coins.
  • How about the 1969 S-1DO-001 Lincoln cent.

rgCoinGuy; Wow!!! That is easily the best specimen I've seen of this coin.

These don't appear in the regular mint sets so choice examples are quite tough. They seem to account for around 3% of production and souvenir set examples. Souvenir set coins are just regular issue so choice examples are little more likely (if at all) in them.

Thanks cladking, I had a raw one, but I didn't think it would grade very well at PCGS, so I watched for one on ebay and got lucky on that one. Good price and seemed nice for the grade when it came in.

  • While we are on dollar coins, we should mention the scarce design variety 1971 D FEV or RDV-006 Friendly Eagle that appears on only a few of that year and mint.

Then there is the scarcer 1972 P type 2 reverse that matches the artwork seen on the 1971 S proof and all 1972 S specimens.
  • If you want a rare modern try the edge lettered sac dollar. What is there like 1 known to exist.

Speared Buffalo Nickel is a popular one, though I don't own one. And I never thought they would take off like they did.
  • Type 2, Clad, PR 1970 No S Roosevelt Dime ,

    Proof: Mintages 2,632,810

A typical example of a modern mint error, with values close to $1000.00 in PR 64, and also a slight premium for cameo examples.

Wile the 1968 No S Dime has reached premiums up to $1500.00 in PR 64 and above.

This thread needs GOLD! The 1999-W $5 & $10 gold eagles are pretty good examples of either mint error or variety.image
