REGISTERED MAIL GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR..!!

Sent a registered mail package to Chicago a week ago tomorrow; about 350 miles from Ames, Iowa. Recipient says no show as of right now. I went to the PO and asked them to check. She says all it shows is accepted at Ames, IA. Having read here that it is scanned in and out at every stop I says, then it must still be here. She says no. Then she says its logged in manually on paper at every stop, but it is not scanned in electronically at every exchange like it is at UPS for instance. So basically she had no clue as to where it was and said it was much too early to even start a search. Neat huh?
There is supposedly a link at the bottom of the USPS home page that lets you b*tch to the postmaster and that maybe I mite want to try that.
FWIW only EXPRESS MAIL is electronically scanned in and out at every change.

<< <i>Not sure what the complaint is. Everything is as I would expect it. If you're in a hurry use express mail but these coins are hundreds of years old. What's another week? >>
They will be hundreds of years old by the time they get there. My comment is that those who have posted here in the past that registered is scanned at every stop/exchange are wrong. Also their tracking system seems antiquated and useless.
Seriously though, I've found it really makes no difference how far Registered Mail travels. I've had it take 10 days to go 150 miles across the state to Tampa, FL. It's an aggravation, but on high dollar items I just grit my teeth and take it.

I've never seen that claim. In fact it is in a locked bag making it hard to scan. I've often suspected that the delays might be arranging for the guy with the key to be there. Don't expect registered to be trackable like express. --Jerry

One time it took 8 days for a Registered Mail parcel that I was the recipient of to travel 40 miles. Before I permanently switched to FedEx for PCGS shipments it wasn't unusual for a package outbound from PCGS (Santa Ana, CA 92705) to take upwards of one week to reach me, and that's considering that my shipment address is about 350 miles from PCGS.

<< <i> Whay can't their service be secure and speedy? And with a computer and a bar code why can't they track a frikken package. >>
If you wanted speedy, why didn't you send it via a speedy service? Where did you ever hear that registered mail was speedy? I also don' tthink anyone ever said that registered was scanned along the way. It is SIGNED every hand-off, but not scanned.
As much as you are complaining about the USPS taking over a week to get a secured package to Chicago, the USPS is probably complaining about you being impatient and if you wanted it faster, why didn't you choose a faster service?
I will add to all this that Registered Priority is faster than Registered First Class. I was very surprised to learn this, but it does seem to be the case.

I have used registered many times and I know it aint speedy. I just asked why can't it be if you read my post. Even the gal at the PO thought that a week was too long.

Well, UPS Blue or Red are certainly more expensive and not insured. BUT, it gets there faster and electronically tracked. The problem is, that you want it signed for along the way, electronically tracked along the way, fast, and cheap. I don't know what you pay for for gas, but I don't the PO has a super insight into cheap gas.
You sent it out on a Saturday which means that it didn't leave anyplace until Monday, probably in the afternoon/evening. Today is Friday. That's really only 4 days worth of travel. Give me a break. You'd think that you were the only one sending a package.

That is a bit uncalled for tmot.
The postal service sucks we all have to admit that, even with the new rate increase it still sucks, and you have no batle with them- they are privitized and immortal/inmoral to all- if they lose your package- tough cajones buddy- and we know it.
I'd rather go to Vegas and play craps with my money than wasting it on the almight Registered Postage inservice. I recently sent a pkg from luvly SoCal to Suthern Fla- took a grand total of 2 days- I shipped Priority Express Insured for 2K- showed the idiot behind the desk a manifest of what was inside and gave him a fair but POLITE warning that the pkg better make its destination- he got a bit pissed at me called his boss up front and said I threatened his life- sadly his boss is a coin collector as well and knows ME personally- told the punk- better make sure the customer's package gets in the outbound NOW.
It's good to make friends in the Postal Service from time to time- never lost a outbounder- but have had a few stolen in the past.
Get em - Bajjer- tell em who makes their paycheck....

No matter. It left Ames that same morning for Des Moines so you are wrong already. My whole point in this was that any number of posters here have said here over the years that it is scanned at each stop along the way. Turns out that is not true at all. It is manually logged at each stop. I'm not so much disillusioned with the speed as much as their inability to tell where it is so your comment about it being electronically tracked is wrong as well.

Because the clerk told me before before I left the window that it would leave yet that day for Des Moines.
The advantages of Registered Mail are in the high level of security, which makes insurance coverage for high dollar amounts significantly cheaper than any other mode of U.S. Mail.
They don't electronically scan, they don't promise fast delivery, and if you have them try to track it down, they must manually go through the signature logs at each receiving point. Once you know the process, it's easier to decide whether or not you want what they have to offer in that service.
Hey, it's 35 miles from downtown Ames to Des Moines. Maybe I-35 was busy?
I knew it would happen.
You want it there overnight, USPS is the cheapest way to go.
You want it there the most secure, USPS is the cheapest (and only) way to go.
With Priority Registered under $20, you can't beat it. You want it electronically tracked, you'd have to pay for it. You are already complaining about the cost and that they are going to increase cost.
Exactly how can the USPS make you happy on this? 4 days, via the cheapest, most secure way. Are you willing to pay the UPS or FedEx rates all the time? Heck, you think the drive isn't that far, you could have used a tank of gas and driven it to Chicago yourself.
Ames, IA 50010
Chicago 60604

$2000 value
UPS Next Day AM $40.62
UPS Next Day Saver $37.98
UPS 2nd Day AM $34.02
UPS 2nd Day $31.86
FedEx Priority ON $42.24
FexEx Standard ON $37.98
FedEx 2-Day $26.28
FedEx 3-Day $23.46
FedEx Ground $17.70
USPS Express Mail Insured $16.25 + 6.15 = $22.40
USPS Priority Registered $4.60 + $13.50 = $18.10
USPS Priority Insured $4.60 + $19.90 = $24.50
First Class Registered $1.99 + 13.45 = $15.44
First Class Insured $1.99 + 19.90 = $21.89
They could make me happy by deliverin the thing tomorrow or monday or provide the same 3 day service they did the last time I sent something Chicago's way.

Did you send First Class or Priority? Makes a difference. I thought it was just a weight class, but it does make a time difference. Priority is 2-3 days, but usually adds 1-2 days for registered whereas First Class is whenever (but usually is 2-3 days) and registered adds unknown time to the unknown time.

It was in a flat rate priority box. I asked here out of curiousity a week ago which would would be better to send 7 NGC slabbed dollar coins; flat rate or non flate rate priority. Turns out the non flat rate was the better deal by about a buck. Either way it was priority. It will get there when it gets there I guess.

I have learned that all too well over the years. Its really kind of surprising tho that they don't seem to have any idea of where it is after its scanned in. Then again I have had a registered package get to Florida in 3 days.

Try sending anything via FedEx or UPS other than ground shipping.

Since they don't insure coins or I'm not a BIG user like Heritage that will never be an option unless the recipient specifies it and is willing to pay for it.

I was too at least from the responses that have been posted here over the last couple of years. They can scan it it, but not in between destinations. Awhile back i had them track a package from PCGS mostly to see where it could have sat for days on end The guy said that he could find nothing on it.
