1983-S Prestige set

A coworker knew I was somewhat of a collector and asked me if I would be interested in looking at some proof/mint sets he had inherited from his father. I said sure. So he brought them in, a milk crate FULL! Anyway sat down and did a quick inventory (still have to type a few sets). Included was 5 1983 S Prestige sets in the leather case. From what I have read, only a portion of the total mint qty (~140K) were done in leather due to shipping problems. Question is, does anyone know how many were estimated to have been in leather and how many in the felt case?

I honestly didn't know they came both ways. Anytime I get one, it's leather.....
Just dumped one the other day.
  • Mind if I ask how much you got for it? PCGS price guide lists it for $110.

re: the different cases, thgis is from coinfacts

1983-S Prestige Sets contain one each of Proof example of the Cent, Nickel, Dime, Quarter Dollar, Half Dollar and the Olympic commemorative Dollar. The first sets were packaged in a leather case, but because of alleged delivery problems, the remainder of the sets were packaged in a velvet case.

I bought and sold thousands and all have been in the leatherette binder. I've never seen a felt one from 1983.

Make sure you check the dime in every set for the 1983 No S dime!

Thanks for the tip Richie! Knew about the proof sets. Didn't even dawn on me to check the prestige sets.

I had one of each and was always curious why they were offered in two different cases. I sold the leather one a long time ago. I still have the felt one..... somewhere. If I find it, I'll have a giveaway.image

I'm reasonably sure that the felt case one is aftermarket. It's not US Mint issue. If it were it would have US Mint printed on the inside cover silk with the Olympic rings.
