Ebay issue, advice wanted
O.K. first I apologize this is not coin related but currency. Not much action on that side of the house. Need some advice, I purchased a large type note on 25 April, seller had it listed since the 19th. It had a BIN for 295.00. I emailed him and asked if he would take 275.00 and I would take it. He lowered the price, I bought it paid through paypal. Done deal. So today a letter comes from him I think its the note, open it up and its a check for the amount I paid plus a small size $2 (1976) he states he cant "find" the note I paid for. His feedback in the 70's with 100% positive. He left positive feedback as soon as I paid on the 25th. What bothers me about it, why not email me and let me know? Just leave it go? What kind of feedback if any?

<< <i>Honestly, I'd leave it go and not leave any feedback. It would have been better for him to e-mail you and let you know he had to refund your money, but he still made good. You're not out any money...just some time and a little aggravation. No harm, no foul if you ask me. >>
Life is too short to make it in to a bigger deal.

Edited to add: Apparently Paypal does free refunds. Good for them. I never knew that.
tore the place up looking for them, then the embarassment of having to refund because "we can't find it." Most people were
understanding, but a couple were really irate...accused me of selling it to someone else...actually it was a Vatican gold coin of
Paul VI which was sold to me for $90 and sold for $200..I would have LOVED to ship the coin rather than a refund check!
<< <i>He probably didn't refund through Paypal because he didn't want to stick you with the fees. >>
There are no fees to receive a refund.
If the check clears, he is out more money and it isn't a wash for him. Ebay fees, paypal fees, etc. I am willing to think he doesn't know enough to know he could just refund through paypal.
Maybe, if you are really concerned, you can email him, thank him, and say you are willing to rip up the check, to save him fees, if he wanted to refund through paypal and you could mutually agree not to complete the auction on ebay.
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
People come to eBay in all states of mind, educational and cultural backgrounds, family influences, life experiences, etc. just as they do elsewhere. I would not neg' this person because it sounds like he made an honest mistake and mailing you an immediate refund along with the "olive leaf" of a $2.00 bill was his way of saying "I'm sorry". He probably has a memory problem which is why he not only forgot where he stored the note but also forgot to email you a heads up about sending you the refund.
I'd cut him some slack and just leave a brief, but positive feedback like, "Transaction mix-up resolved amicably", or something similar. Personally however, I'd also probably put him on my blocked bidders list, to avoid any future disappointments or hassles like that, should he ever decide to intersect my life as a buyer of my items.

I agree with you. I would offer the mutual agreement if it seems like an honest mistake.

Ditto. On a couple of occasions over the past 10 years on ebay I have lost an item or two. Hold off on feedback and see if he lists it again in a month or so.

Good idea Utah. Just to see

I just had to replace my glasses at $250 because I sat them down somewhere and forgot where I put them.
I'd cut the guy some slack if I were you.

Anyway I agree with everybody and would let it slide, pos feedback AFTER the check clears.
At least he sent you a cool $2 bill. What's the S/N on the bill? He should have emailed, but he probably felt embarassed and didn't.
I'd just not buy from the guy again.
<< <i>I think you should really screw him... cash the check, and then file a dispute with PayPal claiming the item never showed up and get a refund out of them too.

This is the kind of remark that would've made my Mom smack me & the reason I'll never click on a link in your sigline! Hope you're not a seller cause you just lost a customer...or two. You're a member of what associations?

I agree with the rest, and would either leave no feedback, or positive as suggested after the check clears. It's happened to many sellers at some time in business. Coins (or currencies) do get misplaced in safes, or during packing/unpacking for shows, or maybe sold and forgotten. I can see it happening more easily with currency, just with my own cluttered desk. Have it sitting in the wrong place, covered with a few pieces of mail or other papers, then moving a stack around - it would be awhile until I found it.
