If it isnt a 1883-P VAM-10 Sextupled Stars, what is it?

Not that happy with the pics but I dont feel like reshooting it at this hour. Was able to pick up on the die cracks from star to neck and 1 to neck in the auction.

I'll see your bunny with a pancake on his head and raise you a Siamese cat with a miniature pumpkin on his head.

You wouldn't believe how long it took to get him to sit still for this.

That's a great, rare VAM. Congratulations!
    When in doubt, don't.

Are you sure that is a VAM-10? The ones I have and have seen are pretty dramatc. Ther eis also a good crack down from the D/DOLLAR and the breaks to the first left star are pretty evident. The crack to the 1 in the date and the position of the 3 are similar for at least two other obverses.

Very difficult VAM to find, and confusing to attribute. Stars are a bear to photo. Hope it works out.

VAM 10 has a very dramatic sextupled 6th right star with the sextupling on the rim side of the star.
  • Sorry, I don't "think" yours is a V-10; I can't see the dramatic "steps" in the star and the die cracks do not match(similar but no match). Here's the link to double check: http://www.vamworld.com/1883-P+VAM-10

Great topic to talk about though. I bought one of these several years ago, and yes, it was mis-attributed. VAM-10 is nearly as hard to find as 1878 8TF VAM-14.11 and 1880-P VAM-8 in the Top 100.

Ok I'm having a devil of a time getting the stars to focus where I can get a good photo of the stars with my QX3. I double checked and even the die crack leading out the back side of the 1 to the 8 is present as shown at VAMworld for a VAM-10.

So what do you think it possibly is if it isnt a VAM-10?

Faint clashes and doublings have always given me trouble due to the limitations of my QX3 and my horrible eye sight (which is why I like die gouges, breaks and cracks... they are much easier for my eyes to see).

  • I would have to agree with the others....this isn't a VAM 10. The 6th star is startling enough that even with the pic blurred....it's still pretty recognizable. I have one in a SGS slab that was cleaned and whizzed....will see if I can find the pics.

An SGS slab? You're ruining the coin's energy. Get it in something more reputable.

I have a group (40 or so) that are cleaned but will be coming to you from various slabbers....I think you will like the mix of them image

  • I have never seen the Vam-10 in hand....but it is one I have wanted and been seeking for several years. I cannot say if it is or it's not based on pics.

Could this be a Vam 18....Quadrupled stars??? image ...just a guess!

Here's a helper photo of the 5th and 6th right stars for VAM-10. This is a PCGS coin from my set. You might have VAM-9, also doubled stars, also rare and underappreciated. Can be confused easily with VAM-10.
