Did I Just Get Lucky, or are 1927-S Standing Liberty Quarters not Hard to Find?

RampageRampage Posts: 9,662 ✭✭✭✭✭
I went to the local shop this weekend and noticed they bought a batch of SQLs and through them all in a box as usual. I don't collect these per se, but I know the 27D and S are better dates. So, I glanced at a handful and found a 27S. I then sat down and searched the whole box ( a couple of hundred maybe) and walked away with all these for $4.00 per coin.

The fourth coin appears to have a very weak S (or maybe I am seeing a weak S and really is nothing there). In any case, I at least got the three. Can someone grade them for me? There were some better grade mintmarks coins as well, but I left those behind. I should have probably snagged those, too. Oh well.

I did also pick up an 1877CC, 2 1923P and 1 1924P SQL from the same box for $4.00 per coin. image They are G4 at best I would guess as only the last digit on the SQLs were readable and the 1877 was dark.

One more question for the experts: Why does it seem the 27D is harder to find?

Thanks! Richard.

Not my series but I'd say you did very well.

    Wow, you did very well.

    I grade the 27-S SLQs as such: VG08, F12, VG08, AG03.

You need to run back down to that store and snag the higher grade mm pieces....and then post them on the BST with a reasonable markup for your effort image

When bullion shoots up and many coin shops are over-worked with bullion buying, you can really find some great stuff in the "junk" box" I would say, go back and look at everything!

In answer to your question, you did get very lucky. And although the 27-S is relatively common in lower circulated grades, it is still a low mintage, desirable date.
    Great deal.

I must say that that 4th 1927 is a rather appealing AG coin.

You did very well at that price, but the 1927-S starts to become scarce at the VF20 grade.

Considering that I have owned about 12 SLQs in my life and two were 27-S's, I must conclude that they are not hard to find.
