did you get?

I just opened a box of 12 and got 12 errors. Another box of 10 produced none at all.

I have 30 and it's 16 to 14. This is not an error but rather a variety so I would not expect the recent eBay $125 for an MS69 to last more than a few days. Nice to have a variety though after 22 years of the same exact ASEs. Maybe this will generate some interest in the series and we can find some real errors.

How many errors/varieties are there? Do they have different die characteristics so that die pairings can be figured out?
  • 19Lyds19Lyds Posts: 26,497 ✭✭✭✭
This is gonna play out way cool for the SAE collector's!

What better way to spice up a collection than with eye visible varieties! image

Throw in the First Strike™ slabs and that add's a bunch more to the set!

I hope PCGS desides to go with the first strike on these. I will send them in to get graded but I will not use NGC.

I agree with Griv, the coin is NOT an error, it is a variety.

Ooops, I get it now, only talking the 07 on 08 reverse. I thought an actual error/variety discussion was going to get started. image

Is it not an error when some one mixes up the dies? Was this an intentional act by a mint employee to cause this? I do not feel this was an accidental mixup.

The Mint is so inept that nothing surprises me except the notion that they "planned" this. image

All the "errors" coming out of the mint in the last few years can't be accidental some of it is marketing.

Whether this is considered an error or a variety I would think the market value would depend on the rarity and that may go up or down depending on how many escaped the clutches of the mint. I would think that once word gets back to the mint that variety will be stopped. My latest NN says 180 thousand have been sold and the mint doesn't seem to be too far ahead of sales in production so if the ratio was near 50/50 for the full run then maybe 90 thousand but I doubt it would be that much-possibly much less.

I agree! Varieties that a non-collector can plainly see with the naked eye are way more exciting than some "Small date" 1970 cent or type 2/type1 Ikes, SBAs.

Is it too late to get first strike designation on these coins in an open box?

I'm waiting for PCGS to make a decision on weather or not they will make a first strike designation. They have until the 23rd.

I have a 2008 SAE labeled first strike. Why wouldn't they offer that on the 2008-W SAE?

If so then I hope they do it more often. Of course I would hate to see some mint employees get fired just to stir things up for the collector.

    Hi David,
These seem to be from the ones being delivered in the past couple of weeks. My first subscription order had none in it. The box that shipped out last tuesday is the one with 12 errors in it.

I just opened a box of 12 and got 12 errors. Another box of 10 produced none at all.

Are these UNC or Proof? Seems that they are being found in both.

Anyone looking for 2007 reverse of '08s yet?

Issue date for the 08-W UNC was 3/17 so it's probably too late for opened boxes.

Although I like PCGS better, it seems to me that NGC has less of a milkspotting with their slabs.
I'll probably send mine to them for this reason.

    Regards,

    John

Are you sure about the Proofs? I have not heard any reports of Proofs being found with the Reverse of 2007.

I, also, have not heard about any proofs. When I talked to PCGS Friday , I was told the cut off date for the first strike will be April 23rd. I did not even know about the error at that time. I will be calling them first thing Monday morning though.

OK, I remember the original, unedited post, which did not show a reverse of 2007. Now he has a picture that does.
Under the circumstances, I would like to see a confirmation piece from another source before saying that Proofs exist.

Being a cynical bustard, I wonder how long it will be before some goniff starts cutting the reverse off a 2007-W silver eagle coin and embalming it in a third-world slab along with the obverse cut from a nice-looking regular 2008 silver eagle???

No, it is not an error even when this occurs. It's still a variety.

Hey guys, yeah, that was my post. I bought the coin off of eBay, but I have a bad feeling the guy simply took a picture of the front of the slab and the reverse picture is of a completely different (and older) ASE....

I checked my 2008-W burnished, bullion and proof -- they are the 2008 reverse. Just have one of each.

  • I received four ASE's last week and found ZERO errors, mistakes, deviations, etc...

I know for the series I focus on it was common to take a die that still had life in it and use it the next year. I'm sure that is all that happened with the 2008 reverse of 2007. They may have been doing this for the last 20 years but since there were no recent design changes it was not noticed.
