Does anyone have any info about the rarity of this doublestruck 1822 Bust half dollar?

TennesseeDaveTennesseeDave Posts: 4,863 ✭✭✭✭✭
This just arrived in the mail and as I was checking it out I noticed it appears to be doublestruck.Look at the doubling of the reeded edge on the obv. and rev. Also some doubling of the word Liberty and E pluribus unum. The arrowheads are doubled as well are the stars. Is this fairly rare?Any and all info or opinions will be appreciated. The pictures aren't great, but they're the best I can do.

  • Wow, you're actually correct, it is double struck, with the second strike slightly rotated.

The second stike is most evident in the doubling of LIBERTY and the bold doubling of E in E PLURIBUS UNUM, as well as in the arrowheads and the stars

What did you pay for it?

About what you would expect to pay for a regular 1822 Bustie in VF.There was no mention of the doubling in the auction and the pics weren't good enough to see it.

Neat double struck Bustie. The doubling makes this one worth a whole lot more than double money.

I also believe it is double struck and obviously worth a substantial premium.

    Hey TD.
Looks like a real nice keeper.
You don't see these errors on CBH's very often.
I would think that your coin would be valued at some good money now
that it has been properly identified.
    Congrats buddyimage

  • Very interesting coin..........appears to be struck slightly off center too.

What a nice find! I can imagine your pleasant surprise as you inspected her for the first time and then again, once you were convinced your eyes weren't deceiving you.

I have only seen a couple double strikes in the CBH series but the others were more pronounced in the doubling. Yours has a very nice look.

The reverse toning looks familiar. Did you win her off the bay? Was thinking perhaps I saw her there a few weeks ago.
  • The doubling on the stars is really striking- congrats on a super-cool bustie!image
