2 quick first time show questions....

1. Do you leave coins overnight at the show? If so what do you do? Lock cases and cover them and take a few of the pricier pieces with you? I don't live far from the show so I plan on taking the coins with with and leaving the rest of the stuff.

2. What bulbs do you find best for a show? Reveals? Comp Fl? Regular bulbs?

    1. You basically answered your own question. Ask about the security that the show will have, and if you feel safe and confident to do so then you can leave most of your coins in the cases overnight. Chances are if most other dealers are doing that then it's probably safe to do so at that show. Also remember that one of the biggest security weaknesses occurs during your transit between your home and the show so carrying a few select pieces may not be the safest option for yourself.

    2. Whatever type of light bulb you prefer and believe will assist you best with examining coins. Everybody has different preferences.

I notice that some dealers at shows set up really large safes behind their tables. Must be difficult and expensive to move these safes from show to show.

Thanks guys. I think taking the coins with me will be easy so that may be my route for a portion of them. I had another question that of course now I cant remember....

    Is that "experience" talking?
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

I did the Santa Clara show once, most dealers just locked the cases, covered them and took off. I think there is probably enough security so that it is safer on the floor at night than it is in at your house or hotel room. at least at the bigger shows.

Those are almost certainly rented from a local safe company. In most of the major cities that a coin show would be at where the bigger companies that would need a safe would go to, there's probably more than just one show/convention per year that would require that... I imagine in a lot of these places there's other collectible shows and jewlery/diamond shows that go on where a safe would be needed by certain companies.

Those safes are almost always rentals from a local safe company. By renting a safe your inventory is much more secure, but there are times when the safe malfunctions and causes extreme inconvenience (one time the safe NGC rented with some of my coins stored inside was jammed and it took seven hours to get the safe open).

Observational experience. I was at a large show many years ago. A prominent dealer was in a hurry to leave. Apparently he thought an assistant had removed coins from all his cases - he grabbed the handle on a case, pulled it off the table, the lid popped open and out poured his Morgan dollars - most in 2x2s. (This was in the pre-slab world.) Everyone had a good laugh and the guy's assistant went nuts.
