Super Sig Sunday

Since there seems to be a lot of interest in the Raw Card Saturday thread, I thought I might try to introduce a Super Sig Sunday thread. Every Sunday I will post a couple more autographs. Everyone is welcome to do the same.

I'll start it off with one of my favorite baseball players....

One of my favorites - Lou Boudreau (HOF'er) signed Official Batting Order - with Ted Williams batting 3rd.

Here's a good one.

In the end of 1991, I bought a lot of 8 53T auto'ed commons from Rotman Auctions - one of them was Newhouser.

In 1992 - he was voted into the HOF!

Nice stuff everybody. This is my favorite autographed item. It is the black & white photograph that the '52 Mantel card was based on and is limited to 1,952 pieces.

I've shown these two a few times, as they are easily my two favorite non-Will Clark items. The autos don't show up very often on eBay, but they do from time to time. Another board member (Stone, I think) has the refractor version of the card, which is limited to ten, I believe. I haven't seen one of those hit eBay since I've been looking. I'm sure the refractor is a great card, but I might like the standard version more, as it looks more like an actual 1970 Topps card.

Mike, if you're reading this, how about showing your card again?

My Annika Sorenstam auto on a kwik shop/Dillons advertisement. Why on a kwik shop ad? That's how my Women's open golf program came out of my pocket, and I wasn't smart enough to refold it with the front cover showing as Annika approached.

I have been getting into Heisman autos lately. I want all the autographs to be able to fit into a scrap book, and I have been picking up other like sized items like ticket stubs and rookie cards.

That Thorpe is incredible! The few sigs of him that I have seen are on pieces in far less better condition than that photograph.

Here are a couple of my favorites...

I was shocked to discover how cheaply these go for given both are all-time legends, charter members of the HOF, and deceased. True, neither of their signatures is particularly rare, they are incredibly inexpensive compared to current star signatures in products today.

OK - on the book side of the house:

First - "The Mick" which is signed on the inside - and PSA/DNA cert. - these books actually sold in the book store from Doubleday as signed I believe - there's a sticker on the dust jacket attesting to that.

Next - "Wilt" - don't know how I got this book? For all I know - it's an autopen.

And everyone likes Ryan!

I think I'm up to about 20 auto'ed books - many don't like them since the auto's are hard to display - doesn't bother me at all.

Heisman autos are cool - I remember when Plunkett was playing for the Raiders and my wife was half-listening to the announcer who mentioned his parents were blind.

She says - "how can a guy play football if they're blind?"

And she's not even blond!

I've thought about doing the Heisman series also - has anyone come out with a set - like the PS HOF PCs? I could see that being popular - especially if they came out with a special auto version?

Stone, that is a classic and quintessential Mick auto... he had one of the most beautiful signatures ever.

I wonder if these signed copies command a premium with book collectors as well as sports hounds? Either way, I too have noticed that signed books don't seem to have as much demand as other signed items, probably for the very reason you stated. Additionally, books can be difficult to find and keep in pristing condition, especially the dust jackets.

Thanx Snorto and I agree.

On the other hand - it's a nice way to get a "tough" auto at a reduced fee especially if a "personalization" doesn't bother you.

As we all know - Russell is one of the toughest autos in the hobby - he wouldn't even sign for teammates! Of course for money in later years? That was OK? What a turd!

So - this one was in a "lot" and acceptable to me:

Cool - the Miracle on Ice guys are the best!

I saw a special on the team on HBO - I never tire of seeing a story about them - to me - it's one of the greatest sports stories of all time!!!

Here is my autographed Murray rookie and Ripken rookie...

This is my favorite piece. Originally got the Game used base from MLB (Ripken last game at Yankee Stadium) and had Ripken sign it at an event at work...

Finally, these are my oldest autographs that I got in person. It was a church sports banquet in 1984. Dan Marino, Duke Snider, Dom Dimmagio, Willie Mosconi, Nick Giaquinto (Redskins). I was also "smart enough" to get two autographs from people who worked with my dad (Lewis and Dimarco), one of the President of the banquet group (Meriggi) and I have no idea who is in the bottom right.

That's a great group of sigs!

The DOD touring bands are incredible! I've seen some great bands - as a member of a "house band" - we played along side of some really great sounding guys. Some who played with bands like Kansas, ELO, Steve Miller etc.

They pay well and they fly via C130s every where they go.

Not an autopen but the sig is preprinted on the picture. Yankees, Mets, Phillies, Royals all sent these out when you wrote the the players. I don't think the players ever saw your mail and the Yankees kept the stuff you sent to boot.

Here are some of my raggedy vintage Dodgers. The Erskine, Newcombe and Podres were obtained IP. I purchased the Lasorda at a show, but don't know if it's real - got a great deal on it regardless. The Campy was one of the first cards I received when I joined OBC 11 years ago. I was blown away, first by the card itself - when I joined, I had no idea I'd be collecting pre 1960 Dodgers. There was no way I'd ever have cards of HOF legends like Campy, Jackie, Duke and Pee Wee. This card almost singlehandedly blew away that misconception. I think the sig is real, but don't care enough to have it slabbed. Having it slabbed would also take away from the magic of the story behind it.

My newest addition. 8 x 10 signed in gold paint pen. VERY hard to find anything signed by McGwire in paint pens, especially the earlier style sig (in fact this is the first I've seen).
