Do You Have A Pet Date?

BAJJERFANBAJJERFAN Posts: 31,626 ✭✭✭✭✭
Is there one date/mm that you cherish the most that would be your pet date? I know over the years that a number of forum members have made mention of having mini hoards of certain dates like DennisH and the 95-s. I don't have one yet, but I'm thinkin on it. Got a bunch of multiples mostly cuz of the toner thing.
How bout you all? Any pet dates?
Good thing the OF is closed, I can imagine the spoofs and the spooks.image

I love 1878-S and 1878-CC (Type 1 concave breast reverse) Morgan Dollars, and have also accumulated quite a few 1880-S and 1881-S Morgans because of either their gorgeous cartwheel mint luster or their pretty Prooflike fields.

I also like the 1880-CC Overdates, especially with the Type 1 concave breast reverse. image

1888 O Morgans. I have by far at least 4x more of them than any other date/MM combo.

I had been known to date a Buffalo now and then when I was younger, but none were exactly my pets. They were pretty easy in those days too. Give them just a little acid and you'd get a date.

Seriously, maybe 1811. I hoarded those half cents for a while.

I chose to start putting together a collection of 1854 coins mostly after flipping through my red book and noticing this year had a lot of varieties/MM's, and reasonably available (even for the gold pieces).

So far I have the half dime, dime, and half dollar.

Yep - 1054 AD. The year the Taurus supernova occurred and the year of the schism between Roman ("catholic") and Constantine ("orthodox") factions of christianity occurred. However, 1071 is also tempting - the battle of Manzikert occurred.

1860 When I was putting my type set together I found it such a challenge to find nice problem free mid grade coins from that year.
Examples are reasonable for the most part but not easy to find, VF 30 was my target.

If I had to pick one, probably 1877 being a long-time IHC collector. It's an awfully expensive date for a date set, though.

The Forming of the crab nebula in Taurus is why I remember 1054. I didn't think anyone would get it, especially when I paired it with a political event--the signing of the Magna Carta. ---jerry
