Looks like the piece of the obverse die that broke off and formed that giant cud was struck by the obverse die. You can see the "987" of the date and the semi-circle from the side of the die. So essentially, you have an obverse die that clashed with itself.

Off-center bronze antoninianus of the Roman-British secessionist emperor Carausius, 286-293 AD.
On ancient coins, off-center strikes don't add a premium; in fact, it's seen as a slight detraction ("poor centering").
Nevertheless, I liked this piece, thought it had character, and I needed Carausius for my emperor set, so I bought it.
Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.
