Jefferson nickel looks like brass or copper

baddogssbaddogss Posts: 1,309 ✭✭✭✭✭
While searching rolls of Jefferson nickels this weekend I found 2002-P that looked like it was made on a cent planchet. The coin is very red in color, but weighs the same as a nickel. Any ideas? Thanks, Bob

Could be copper wash or discolored from chemicals. Need to see pictures to be sure.

Only a guess but I would say that is all due to corrosion. Try scraping the surface a bit and see if it is copper or not.

It looks a lot like my metal detecting finds...most nickels I find look like that after being in the ground for a while.
  • I held on to these ones because the colors where so cool the one on the right also looks like copper is showing.
I think that this is caused by environmental corrosion. I like the purple on the right one.
