My Shipping policy in a nut shell.
$5.95 for a slabbed coin includes S.H.I.P.
(Shipping handling packaging and insurance ) All items.
Multi Purchases is an extra $2 and $0 after the second purchase in a 24 hour period. I usually have 10-20 items ending with in that period hence the policy.
Raw coins are $2.95 and $1.00 extra after the second purchase in a 24 hour period includes all items include SHIP.
Conversation is as follows:
"bidding on several of your other coins - lets wait to see if I win those so that we can combine shipping - OK?"
"I do have REDUCED shipping for multiple purchase within a 24 hour period
Keep that in mind when bidding"
"Hmmmmmm....... thought this was about things of value for sale to the highest bidder - not "Let's see if we can make a profit off of shipping."
"Feel free NOT to bid on ANYMORE on any of my auctions.
Ebay fees Paypal fees and INS which is I required on all purchase has too be paid .. and as such sets my shipping policy.
With Regards"
"You are already on my list of "Do not buy from" .... fortunately, after more than 1.000 purchases on ebay, that is a short list - You figure it out."
"I have done the same ..
I find it funny you didn’t even ask what the reduced amount was going to be …
Would you like me to cancel this auction … ? Your call … "
"Yep - that would be good."
and I cancelled it and left him this as a feedback ( wonder if I will get the same? )
"Amiable discussion on my Policies - Bidder decided to opt out - I had no problem"
I will let you know what me feedback is if any .. Your comments are welcome

That is part of the business and against ebay policy to charge for, which is what you are essentially saying you are doing.
I won't say that your SH is out of line, though it is a bit high for 1 item that is slabbed, but to state in an email to a potential bidder that you are recouping your fees through it? Not good, imho.
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
I would have given him at least 2 weeks to buy and combine shipping. What would it have hurt? I like having guys look at my auctions over multiple payperiods. He may have gotten a raise during the 2 weeks. I just completed a sale yesterday to a guy who bought a MS66 set of Monroes 6 weeks ago and has been waiting for a set of 65s for combines shipping ever since. I just got them. Just my way of doing it. Yours is fine too. --Jerry
Against eBay rules to try and recoupe those.
Wondering why the difference in price in shipping, raw vs. graded? Weight?
Anyway, not terrible shipping policy. Certainly not one that would make me question you for profitting off of it.
Another question. You wrote the scenario like this guy was bidding. Was he actually the winner of multiple auctions?
If so, we need a name to add to the blocked bidders list.
<< <i>I get the shipping/insurance/handling.....why do you have to tell a customer "ebay fees/paypal fees" have to be paid?

Point understood BUT do not be naive it is done all the time and the conversation was done respectfullyy via personal email.
If you reread the text it is the time frame and NOT the intial cost of shipping and not the $ for multiple purchases which was his issue because he never asked ...
I respect everyones opinion and thank you for allowing me the rubutt ..Regards
<< <i>why do you have to tell a customer "ebay fees/paypal fees" have to be paid? >>
These fees are part of the cost of doing business and must be paid, I don't see a problem
with pointing this out. Do I think $5.95 is high for shipping a slabbed coin? Maybe slightly, for most
coins of fairly low value. Postage for 1 slab in a 000 bubble mailer is $1.30 first class.
Add in $1 for the mailer (you can buy em for less than 20c if you buy in bulk). How much
for "handling" is a tough one, and insurance depends on the coin, but again, low priced
item, say under $100, it's what $1.65? $4 is reasonable. Is $5.95 way out of line? I don't
think so. Let's face it, most people on ebay are trying to make a buck or two on shipping,
and jgrinz's shipping charge is lower than most coin seller who are not including
insurance.

I will not name him as I do not agreee with this as an answer to the problem.
Thanks for your thoughts
IT stickers/envelope seals - 5 sheets per pack, 8 stickers per sheet
They charge $4.87 for USPS shipping.
Compare shipping and handling to any auction house or retailer. They usually have a minimum charge because it takes the employee the same time to pack up a $10 coin as it does a $1000 coin. As you point out, ebay fees keep going up and losing money on shipping is even less enjoyable than it used to be. I currently am charging the USPS exact amount to the penny and eating the cost of the shipping materials. Yes, Goose, I just bought $200 worth of ink and gas is close to $4 out here. The new DSR system requires a daily trip to the post office to keep your shipping time star up. As my previous poll showed there are buyers who think that a 1 day delay knocks you down to 4 stars, two days or more and you're 3 or lower and kiss the 15% FVF credit goodbye.

However If you sell 10 items to ONE person in a 24-48 hour period are you not in fact shipping for FREE and IN FACT at a loss after EBAY and PAYPAL fees ?? Again naivete aside ... ( Again keeping in mind I consistantly sell 10-20 items ending the same day )

I have done the same thing several times, most sellers say "no problem just let me know when you are done buying". I would have no issue with a seller that replied " I would rather complete each transaction seperately". But your comment:

With this type of statement, what ever you had that I was interested in, I would wait and find it from a seller that had more class.

Don't let 'not wilight's' post fool you. I am not naive about it being done
Read what I said....I mentioned that you MENTIONED it in your reply to the person. That wasn't the smartest to do.

You just have a pathological fetish about enforcing ebays rules for them. Any grey area you interpret in ebay's favor. you seem to hate the fact that any ebay seller might make a dime. Have you ever worked for the IRS?

You may want to re-read Russ' comments. He did not say your policy is wrong, just that when someone asks about multiple items, he states "no problem" instead of "read my policy". All he was pointing out was that is probably where the problems started. Had you said "no problem" instead of "Keep that in mind when bidding", this thread would probably not even be needed as you would have had a satisfied bidder.

If I had, you would know it by now
What you interpret as me being in ebay's favor is my way of setting my own expectations so I don't feel let down or lash out at folks/businesses when I should have known better. That way, if it goes the other way, I am happy. If it doesn't, then it was an expected turn. Much easier doing that than always thinking people are out to get you and whining about it

I didn't say your policy was wrong. I said that you went wrong with your response. Your bidder was not asking for a re-iteration of your policy. They were looking for a response that made them feel as if their business was welcomed and appreciated. Your response did exactly the opposite.
Now, in the future, when you ask for opinions you may want to specify only opinions that agree with your pre-conceived notion.

<< <i>You have a very reasonable shipping charge policy. It's funny though how buyers will evaluate it. Say they buy a bunch of slabbed coins and end up with your $7.95 maximum charge (after the 2nd lot in 24 hours). Then you ship and it costs you about $20, as an example to do so. The box arrives. The buyer sees the postage meter thing that says say $23.75. They ASSUME you charged them that much to send it and don't bother the read the DAMNED invoice. So they give you zero stars for excessive shipping charges. Don't thnk such happens? I charge NOTHING (zero, ziltch, free) for my lots. Someone got a several hundred dollar one form me and I, naturally, sent it registered/insured and with the PayPal idiotic signature confirmation. Cost me plenty to do so. They reacted as stated above. I could care less about that star though since when I offer coins on eBay and specify FREE shipping, why should they care about some excessive shipping charge history. eBay can somedays be a parade of total idiots. >>

I don't know how much clearer I can make this. Your bidder said he was bidding on several items as asked if it was ok to wait before he paid. You responded by re-iterating your payment policy. Why not simply say "that'll be fine", or "no problem". Those types of responses encourage repeat business. Your response just killed it.

PayPal and Ebay fees are completely independent of shipping costs. Completely. They (shipping costs) should be in line with just that - costs associated with physically shipping the products sold, IMO.
That being said, I think that your policies are very acceptable. I would hesitate to enter into a seller relationship with such an Ebayer.

I must agree. Written words often seem harsh; the fewer issued the better.
I like " yes" and "no" and "OK," when I talk to EBAYers.
$5.95 is not excessive, but it is likely seen as high by many EBAYers.
I have long used "Free" shipping. I do 98% BINs, and just add the cost of
delivery into the price marked. When I do auctions, I use a reserve that is
enough to give me what I want.
I have problems with buyers, BUT never about shipping and handling.
Any mention of trying to recoup EBAY/PayPal fees is counter productive.

I agree with Russ on this, the whole idea for me is to sell the item's, I don't make any money on shipping, if anything I lose money, but I have had customers return again and again, sometimes paying a little more than others are getting for the same item. The reason? 1st they know that the items they purchase is professionally packaged (lot’s of new bubble wrap) Printed labels (PayPal shipping labels), the benefit to these is the automated sorting equipment moves the package faster through the system by scanning the bar code instead of having to manually enter the information, this can save up to two days of shipping time, and having the packages scanned in at the post office and sending a shipping notice to the customer so they can track the item and know it’s on the way.
If you’re not into customer service and satisfaction you need to find something else to do besides sell your stuff on Ebay.

It's not clear to me if this statement was meant to advise the buyer of your policy, thinking that he may have overlooked it, or if it was meant to induce him to try to win more and that the items would be shipped at a reduced fee.
In either case, he did not appreciate it and it was at that point that he turned belligerent. I don't know why you would characterize your discussion as amiable, he was in your face with terms like "NOT" and "you figure it out".
<< <i>PayPal and Ebay fees are completely independent of shipping costs. Completely. They (shipping costs) should be in line with just that - costs associated with physically shipping the products sold, IMO. >>
EBay fee's ARE independent of shipping costs but PayPal fee's are NOT!
When a buyer pay's your shipping fee's using PayPal, PayPal still charges you 3% on the funds received so if you ship at actual postage cost, you will lose 3% on every item you ship.

I don't think your policy is the problem, it's your attitude, both with the Ebay customer and the folks here giving you opinions that you asked for!

I tried little ones on you and that didn't work. Maybe using big ones you'll look them up.
The OP asked a question about his shipping fees and enforcement of his policy. I (and Russ) both said we would have handled it differently but stayed on point. You as usual hijacked the thread to interpret a statement ebay fees and your obsession with ebay rules. If you had been fishing yesterday this thread would have gone much differently. --Jerry
I agree with Russ and Jerry. Make the customer feel like he is wanted, not like he is talking to a government bureaucracy.
I do agree with the OP that the buyer became excessively hostile. If I were the buyer, I would have paid for my one item, and that would be the very last you ever heard from me.
