Three leg Buffalo Nickel

I have a raw 1937 Three leg Buffalo Nickel. It was part of my fathers collection.
I live where no coin dealers are within 100 miles.
I would like to sell it but cannot grade coins myself. I have researched the coin and know it is not a fake.
Should I buy a membership at PCGS and get it graded or trust some coin dealer to give me a fair price?
Like I stated the closest coin dealer in a big city is about 100-150 miles away.
Thanks for any info.

By all means pay the money and get it professionally graded.

It's one of those coins which needs to be in PCGS plastic.

Here's the reverse in AU55 plastic. Notice the raised die marks extending down from the bison's

belly through the field between the legs, and the moth-eaten appearance of the back leg and neck.

Straight out of the Coin Grading and Counterfeit Detection soft cover 2nd edition.

It's your business of course, but since you say you are learning, it tells me that you have some interest in collecting also...or at least I think it does. In that case, I wouldn't be in a big hurry to get rid of that 3 leg Buffalo as it is a rarity that many wished they owned and you may regret parting with it in the future.

You might give the forum an idea of where you live (general discription) in case they might know of a good dealer in your area. It might well be worth a trip of 100 miles to go to the right dealer.

Otherwise, your plan to have the coin certified is a good one. You'll have proof the coin is genuine and a good idea as to where it grades and consquently, what it's worth. Certified rarities bring better money than raw ones.

Good luck which ever way you go.

If you could tell us where you live im sure someone here knows of a PCGS dealer who could submit the coin for you. All you would have to do is ship the coin insured to the dealer and they will get it done. Thats what I would do if i were in your spot.

By all means get it graded.

I had mine graded and it graded a 55.

I had to buy a membership and submit a certain amount of coins but it was well
    worth it.

If that is the only coin you have to grade I would find an authorized dealer to send it in for me.

    Good luck!

  • I live in northern Wisconsin up by Michigan. The closest cities are Duluth MN and Wausau WI. Does any body know a dealer I can trust up here to send in the three leg buffalo?

  • If you are able to post of photo of the coin in this thread, there are also many knowledgeable and friendly people here who can give you an opinion of both its grade and its worth. It will at least give you an idea so that you don't get "taken" by a dealer who might be looking to take advantage of an unseasoned collector.

Also, once you get an consensus opinion of the coin's grade and worth, if you are still interested in selling it there is a Buy/Sell/Trade forum here on PCGS's website. I'm sure there are many collectors who would be interested in purchasing it if the price is fair... and they would probably pay you a little more than a dealer would.
