Bought a new camera for coins. Quick question....

I bought a Canon Rebel xTi 400D SLR camera, and I need to know if I need to buy a memory card, or if I can hook up a USB cable from the camera to my laptop. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

That taking the card in and out would get old I'm thinking.

Guess I'm wrong about the Rebel.
I do like using USB on my Nikon though

I would think you do need one, but I really can't tell you for sure. One those questions that most easily be answered by trying it out.

You need a memory card. Lucky for you they are cheap now. You can get a 1Gig for about $10-15.

If you will be using the camera for coins only, you won't need a card. However, I suspect you will be using it for other things so spend a few extra bucks and get a card.

Get a card, they're cheap and it's worth not having the USB plugged into your computer all the time.

P.S. If you buy a macro lens for it, get the 100mm macro. The 60mm is great for details but will lead to problems with lighting. I know, I made the mistake.

They also make a 180mm macro lens that is very sweet.

Buy a couple of memory cards so you have a spare. They sell a 16 gig compact flash on eBay for pretty cheap. It's nice to have if you go somewhere for vacation and don't want to run out of space.

Get the card, then get the 100mm Macro

I bought an extra card and battery to keep in my bag, this has saved me numerous times. I can't count how many times I forgot my primary card in the computer and was lucky to have the backup.

You can pick up the 2gig cards for about 30 bucks.

I agree with the memory card here. I have a media slot on my pc and it's so much easier just taking the card out and sliding it in the pc than it is to dig out the usb cable, plugging it into that tiny little hole and then getting to the USB port. JMO

The Canon 350 works without the card.
The PC or laptop need the Canon software and you need the cable.
You may also need to go to the communication menu and make a setting.

card serves two purposes
1. additional memory to store lots of images. basic memory in the camera will only store so much.
2. one of the ways to get images to your computer is to remove card and plug it into a card reader for download. Other way to download is leave card in camera and connect download cable.

Wanted to add something else about the Canon software.
The remote shoot part is really cool.
You can make camera settings on the PC and take the shot all using the mouse.
You also get to see the images as you take them. A big time saver for me.

Larry now you got me real curious, as I too have the XTi.

For the first time In a while I revistited the software that came with the XTi, I usually just use Bridge CS3, Camera Raw 4.x and Photoshop CS3. I preferred this setup, simply for the Camera Raw application available within Bridge - Which in my opinion smokes any of the software provided by Canon - especially now that Camera Raw touchup JPG's in the same fasion it does CS2 files, including excellant white balance tweeking.

Within the EOS Utility Software, there is something for "Remote Shooting" however that I just noticed, which is tied into either their Zoom Browser or Digital Photo Professional. I'll try to play with it sometime this week, however, if someone else has used it, I would appreciate their comments on it as well. Especially if it can be tied right into Bridge CS3

way too much... 2 gigs at 8 megs is 2000 photos or so... enough for me...

What he said. I find it easier to uplaod from the camera to the PC, rather than pulling out the XD pic card.

I would think this cam either has built in memeory, or at least comes with a 128MB pic card.

The XTI does not have built in memory. Uses a CF card. Does not even come with a 128 MB. They know people buying this camera are gonna be able to afford a mem card of thier choice. Usally a 1GB or 2GB card. The XTI has a nice shutter on it. Not that the shutter speed matters much with coins, but for other things it does.

The XTI NEEDS A CARD to Store any photos. PERIOD!

You can use your camera in a "tethered" mode with this software and cable. Breeze systems

I'd like to try it because I think you can adjust things looking at your screen rather than take amillion test shots moving the card back and forth from the camera to the computer.

as for test pics, all the recent pics I post are with the same camera and mostly the 100mm usm macro in autofocus mode. But I also have the 60mm for larger subjects such as a multiple slab collage for ebay.
