How much is too much for shipping on ebay?
$15 for flat rate, no insurance? This person seems to think that the more expensive the coin, the more he can charge for shipping...oh and no insurance available. What are your thoughts, is this overcharging for shipping? Link

He uses USPS flat rate.
For a $500+ item with insurance that adds up to quite a bit.

Fine, bid a total of 468.50 and you will spend 500.00. Or the seller could offer FREE shipping and you bid 500.00. What difference could it possibly make to you the buyer?

And that cost is $4.60?

If you return it, you only get 468.50 back.

Report him.
I started off by telling him that I thought the shipping was high and he replied with this:
<<<Yea, wouldn't want to get a rare coin like this one because of the shipping rate, wow your a real buyer all right. Try to find another one on Ebay in PCGS, not around. Dip>>>>
I next wrote to him that he was trying to squeeze every dime he could out of the auction and that I would now never bid on his auction because of his attitude and his reply to that was:
<<<No need to squeeze, the coin ROCKED!!!!! Because a REAL coin collector bought it not a poser like you. Retard>>>
Like I said, great customer relations.

Not my style.
EBAY can police their own rip-off sellers w/o my help.
I simply never buy anything from gougers.
wow 135 negatives.....I feel better already about outing him.

Thats sorta how I see it, but lotsa folks here like to play eBay cop.
Seller had return policy but stated items must be return as shipped. Well after 4 months my wifes friend got back $60 for the items but was out $90.00 shipping. And the seller left her NEG feedback stating if she would of paid insurance they wouldn't of gotten smashed.

Does he set up at the shows?
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I just shipped a coin today with $500 of insurance and signature confirmation (for PayPal CYA) and it cost $10.14 for first class mail. Add the 1.09 for the padded mailer. I charged $10 on the auction.

<< <i>from what I know, ebay does not charge a fee from your shipping amount. Like if you had a $500 coin but you put it on for $10 and a shipping fee of say $490 the n ebay would only chargr fees on the $10. Let me know if I am wrong but I think that is another thing he is doing just to make up for the fees. >>
That would only work until someone reported you and your auction went poof.

I'm not criticizing you, but 1.09 is a lot for a padded mailer. You can find them between .11 and .20 each depending on quantity ordered. And yes, the postage w/ins does get a lot higher after $200. I don't think most buyers have a clue. Then eBay wants you to use signature confirmation, which as far as I can tell from some of the threads I've seen, doesn't count for much at all for your $1.75. Oh, you do save the .18 delivery confirmation fee, let's not forget!
But this seller's auctions, for $15, should include the insurance and signature confirmation. Hey, it's HIS ratings and feedback, and he'll never see a FVF discount - too bad.

Holy shoot this guy is nasty.
I laugh at these sellers who tell bidders that if they don't buy insurance, it magically absolves the seller from any responsiblity for shipping loss or damage.
<< <i>Russ, is he this charming at shows? >>
Charming in a smarmy used car salesman sort of way.

Not to defend this guy because he sounds like a jerk, but were you seriously considering buying the coin, or just emailing to harass him about what you feel are high shipping charges?
I had this coin on my watch list (1857 Flying Eagle cent) and had every intention of bidding on it until the day of the auction when I looked at the shipping charges...thats when I wrote him. after his answer there was no way that I was going to bid on his coin.

I sent ebay a note on the "excessive shipping" instead of a direct confrontation with the seller. If you look at his auctions in the past 24 hours, or so,
you will see that his shipping is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay down.
Hmmmmm,
maybe ebay was the way to go?

Does eBay not mark an auction that has been revised anymore? The only way I know of to lower your shipping is by "revising" the auction and I don't see where his auctions have been revised to "lower" his shipping.
Additionally, eBay does not have anyway to indicate if a package is being sent via "registered" mail which in the case of the merc would be the way to ship and which adds considerable cost to the shipping. For an item in the range of $500 to $1,000, registered incurs an additional fee of $12.35 according to this USPS page. If the merc were being sent registered then the $15 shipping would not be excessive in my book.
