Weird B&M Buy

Went to one of the local B&M dealers to look for VAMs int heir silver dollars. They had only about 10 Morgans total and no interetsing dates among them. Someone is apparently hoarding them like mad. Saw a F/VF shield nickel, a no-problem piece but no cuds, great breaks and wasn't a DDO or RPD. Went through their junk box. Picked up this bizarre thing. Looks like a token. The one side is completely corroded and the other has a good bit of corrosion too. The owner thinks it is a silver alloy. So I paid a foolish buck mainly because of the odd and sharp pentagram. Any ideas?

That was my first thought, but I Think they were only made in Brass.

Time to check the Red Book.

    Cool pickup though image

The pic came from Coin Prices magazine. It's a mega rare Gloucester token---only two known. Hence, it must be another lame April Fools joke.

Yea, I noticed in the link I gave there were only 3 known, and knowing Coxe and his knowledge, he would have certainly know what that was... or I would have given him a giant you suck.

At a minimum, a few dozen people will read his thread and now know what a Gloucester Token is image

Yes, it is (sort of) a Gloucester token and an April Fool's joke. Two reasons for the "sort of" qualifier. One is that there are actually no known specimens of the actual token. The other side has XII, which indicates the shilling denomination. That indeed would have had a silver composition. The known examples are not silver alloys and would more appropriately be test strikes or patterns. The other reason is that the image I presented is a fantasy. If you compare to the known specimens, it does not match. Just something I threw together in an image editor on New Year's day for another thread.

I like to bring this up because it is truly an interesting and haunting colonial issue. I plan to return to colonials in a somewhat dedicated way and this would be a major piece to acquire for that set. For many collectors, it is a forgotten page in the red book that is worth looking into. Maybe some serious colonial guys on here will add some more insight into the Gloucester tokens?
