Advice needed. What is the best way to present items for sale on the BST?

I have started posting items for sale on the BST.

I have minimal experience with the BST and ask for some advice on the does and dont's from any forumites who have lots of experience with selling on the BST. Thanks.

Sanction11, I'm like you. I've been thinking of getting my feet wet but when I do I would like to get as close to right as possible.

Maybe LeeG and others with more experience will chime in.

What holds me back is that I believe a decent Pic. of the coin helps, a skill I do not have. Take Care, jws

Sanction, all I can say is I would recommend reading the locked thread at the top of the BST board, then just go and check out what some other people have done on their listings. Pictures are good if you can provide them. Good luck!

One post per day, or one bump to an existing post. If selling more than one item, combine them into one post. Give a description of the items in the title. List a price. Pics if possible, if not a return policy. Include terms, such as price includes shipping or not, paypal taken or not. If selling on the board use FSH (for sale here), use Ebay in title if for auction, WTB if items are wanted.

See what the items are selling for elsewhere. If a person prices them about 5% below completed items on Ebay, they usually move pretty quick and the seller avoids the time and expense of the auction listing. If priced the same, they'll move if they are nicer, harder to find items. If they are common items, or hard to move low demand items, they may not move unless priced at wholesale. Again, best to do the research and list a price. Make offer listings often attract low ball offers unless the item is hard to find and interesting. I ignore all the make an offer threads that list commonly available items.

I like to see pictures, rather than just listings. Also, I like to see a price, and a statement as to whether that price is negotiable. Just my personal preferences.

I need to learn how to post pics on the forums. I tried before but ran into a raod block because my pictures were too large and needed to be resized (whatever that is). I understand people use photobucket to resize pictures and I willhave to check out photobucket.

Further, to the extent this thread (or the one where I stated I have finished my inventory and was going to thin the herd by posting to the BST) has stepped on the toes of Realone or anybody else, my apologies.

More than anything I am seeking advice on the BST, which you have kindly provided.

I haven't been here long but it's clear to me that you are an asset to this forum and have no alterier (sp) motives.

I Think Realone has some good points to an extent.
But there is no way I would link his comments to you.

Painted nails works for a lot of guys. Avoid using fat fingers or dirty nails. The prettier the hand, the more attractive the coins.

While Photobucket may have a limit on the size of the pic they will allow you to upload or host for you; that size is considerably larger [probly about 1 mb] than the size PCGS will allow which is 50kb I think. I don't think people use Photobucket to resize pictures.

There was a seller on Ebay last year who was holding a 1918-D Merc in a 2x2 holder the coin was neat as it had a Huge CUD. I couldn't stop laughing as my first though was "Would You Buy a Coin from this Seller?" as his fingers and nails looked like he just finished doing 200 oil changes on some 18 wheelers!

I've bought and sold from the BST and never had a problem.

To be quite honest though I've listed items for sale and been told I'm too high...... only to later list the same item on ebay and net more money even after the ebay and paypal fees than I was even asking in the BST.

Unless you have real real desirable stuff the best way to sell it.......... is to price it below what it is worth...

Presentation is everything, Broadstruck. We can see this demonstrated in the threads.

The cynical side of me would suggest that you post the coin or coins in question on the regular US Coin forum first, but post them either as new purchases for your collection, as cool coins you have handled or as coins you would never sell. Preferably, you start more than one thread about them over a several week time frame so that folks are saturated with information and some might be frothing at the mouth. Then, after you get compliments and private messages about the coins, write a BST thread and casually mention over and over again on the US Coin forum that these priceless treasures that you had no intention of parting with have now suddenly become available and perhaps even write a short tale as to why they are available. Additionally, have one or more frequent thread-starters on the US Coin forum start one or more threads commenting on the quality of the coins, the shock they have experienced that you are selling or about your niche market. Of course, you would respond to these threads by stating you had no idea that someone would write about your sale and thus would keep the thread at the top for maximum exposure. Presto, your coins will sell.

Here is a simple Image Resizer for Windows XP direct from Microsoft.

It allows you to right click on a picture and resize it (makes a copy of the picture but resized).

Just understand that stating that they are "for sale" on ebay will almost ensure that no one will look at them.
