If coins didn't exist, what would you be doing right now?

pcgs69pcgs69 Posts: 4,409 ✭✭✭✭
Now I know I'll get some smart comments like, "well if coins didn't exist then we'd all be dead" but I'm speaking hypothetically, as in if you never discovered coins, where you be at right now?

I'd probably have started a business and be more involved with the stock market...

If coins didn't exist, I suspect currency and stamp collecting would be a lot more popular.

    I'd probably be collecting dust.

Well, living on the campus of a very large university, who is playing basketball tonight, and who has a recent history of rioting and heavy drinking on major game nights, I think you can imagine image

I'd probably still be collecting higher end Swiss and German watches. You think coins are a money pit, sheesh! I got to the point where I owned just about every Swiss watch in my price range (without venturing into Dufour and Mille territory) and that soured me a bit, so I turned by energy back to coins. Without coins, who knows what i'd collect.

heh, as i pick out the drywall joint compound from my hands after
getting home from work as a 9-5iver in IT.

i agree, if not for coins i would do more work around the house
    on a weekly basis.

but if not coins, original art. i am trying to make a deal with david
boswell right now for an original oil painting of my fav comic character
from him. i am hoping he turns around and sells prints of it on his
    online website.

i would strive to get an original carl barks work. try to talk bob burden
    into an oil painting. etc...

Finishing up some pure physics and mathematics papers (that no private sector employer would ever support) that I promised myself I would do after I retired. Apply for a patent for an idea I have had for a while. Set up a more profitable business than a part-time coin business. Save money on safe deposit boxes rentals and insurance. If I was to obsessively collect something else it would probably be rare records, perhaps things like tough to find "black" and novelty sides and cylinders.

As coins are not yet my main hobby focus, without them I would be spending more time researching Marbles Records, and Sportscards. And as strange as this sounds...without all 4...I would spend my time working on pieces of LEGO artwork.

But they sure were fun! Either going through neat locations looking for some or drinking some newer ones that were just too cool (bottom punched cans of course). Here is my favorite of the few I still own. It was found in Canada and was never opened.

I probably would have invented a car that runs on solar power, one that has no polluting emissions, a range of 1000 miles on one hour of Seattle winter sunlight, and goes zero to 60 in 4 seconds with a top speed of two hundred mph. image

Money might be the third most important human invention right
behind language and writing. Indeed there is some speculation
that writing evolved from engraved discs used as tokens.

The importance of money is usually downplayed in its role as a
driver of human development. Most would relegate it to being no
more important than a means to fascilitate commerce. But a flow-
ing commerce has been critical to not only creating the wealth nec-
esary to progress but making a very wide variety of goods availa-
ble to the greatest number of people. It is this wide availability of
goods which has created the breakneck progress of the past two
and a half millinea (with time out for the dark ages). It is the abil-
ity to get things like microscopes, thermometers, and anemoneters
which has led to advancement as much as these instruments them-
selves. Of what value would be the bessemer furnace were there
no products to make and nowhere to ship them?

I suppose if coins didn't exist I'd be trying to figure out smoe way
    to invent banking. image

I'd be collecting more early spaceflight items, US and Soviet Union, although if I could find some of the early Chinese stuff (e.g. stuff launched in the last 5 years) that may very well prove to be the most valuable over time as an investment, and would certainly be fun to have in the interim.
