<< <i>You are wasting money by opening these rolls. I would guess you've lost $1,000 on the 1937-S roll alone. >>

    I have to agree 100%

Does that presume an initial price of $1,000 and a residual price of zero, i.e., a total loss? >>

No, of course not - I'm a cheap buyer! image But there's gotta be a significant premium for a bank wrapped roll of S mint Lincolns from the 1930's. And who knows what else the OP has!

speaking of the OP - wth did he go?

These rolls need to be looked at by a knowledgeable dealer who will help the OP out and prevent anymore travesties. I hope no more than the two rolls have been opened.

It's hardly a travesty unless you obsessively collect original bankwrapped BU Lincoln rolls. Just dumping the coins out like that won't damage most of them nearly as much as picking them up with ungloved fingers, or trying to jamb them back into that paper roll and scratching them in the process, or by leaving them out in the open exposed to moisture in the air.

Yes, there is a premium on unopened rolls, but there's been no real damage to the actual coins, yet. Yes, the premium for an unopened roll is gone, but it's the COINS that hold the *majority* of the value, not the paper. Unless you happen to have an un-discovered rarity in the middle of the roll entirely by accident, there's usually no real incentive to unwrap them, unless you just can't stand the suspense. I know the feeling.

If the OP is careful and finds a suitable expert to help him, all is well. There is nothing inherently good or bad in opening the rolls. Myself, I prefer them unopened.image

    Congrats on the treasure trove!

I Smell a rat! OP says he opened 2 rolls, all solid date, one 37-S the other 58, if that is the case then examine the picture (which was so carefully laid out) and explain why there is a 1951 in the lower right hand corner of the picture??? While your looking at the picture how many 37-S do you see? I only count 2, out of all of these only two 37-S showing??

I'm surprised no one else caught this...

    Al....

Couple of things....please, you have been here long enough, learn to use the quote function correctly....very confusing otherwise.

2nd....I read her post and had no problem understanding the COLLECTION had been in the family for ~100 years and that the rolls were PART of the collection. It doesn't mean that she was saying the rolls were 100 years old. Come on now! You, and a few others, seem to want this to be a hoax. I could care less if it is true, or a hoax, but I think it is pretty cool as is.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I hide out in my room when I'm on the boards so that this doesn't happen.

Of course this is only possible because I'm only a kid and not yet a parent.

Sorry don't have the time to do that but I can say that it seems every time the forum gets a new poster who has just found their grand-daddy's collection or uncovered coins in a wall never turns out to be what they say. it very often turns out to be a hoax . And what I mean by a hoax here, is that it isn't what they say it is, or just another story to garner attention, or that it is a game just to play with our heads because we all love to hear about the real thing. In this particular situation the op has been selling more coins on the internet than you can shake a stick at (always wanted to use that expression). She is not in need of any help with what should she do with her bank wrapped what backs, she is in the process of selling them all on the bay by providing photos and her link as if this is the BST. She knows exactly how she would like to handle her coins, she has been handling sales in a very profession manner since at at least as far back as 5/07. She is no fool and her 10 kids aren't standing in her way of having as many auctions as we speak than most on this forum. So in essence this was a hoax in the respect of the intent of the thread, seems like she has the product and a nice one indeed. But if you read some of her listings she describes her product at times as " All my coins have been handed down to me and unsearched, all 1930's mixed". She shows photographs of the coins so how can they be unsearched as uses the typical inherited story. Albeit it may be inherited but I think the way she portrayed her first post as a woman who was completely new at this was in some sort of distress not knowing how to handle what she had uncovered, and that frankly isn't the case. Seems she cars more about selling these Lincolns more than about how to preserve them. Go ahead flame away I have been there before.

    Original Post

<< <i>Ok here is the deal over 2yrs ago we had thousands of coins handed down to us & yes still going threw them 2 this day lol not even half way threw them i quess you can call it a hoard? Anyways i just opened a boxup an there was 97 rolls in it banked wrapped wheat backs P,D,S 1915 & up Now i have came cross walkers & such other type coins in the past and latley & threw them in the safe until i feel it is time to open them. Now im dieing to open the wheat backs up cuase im working on a couple of my lincoln cent books atm.

So what would you do leave em be or crack em open?

Thanks! ( Also can anyone post that 1942 steel proof cent that was on the board awhile back?) >>

Seems to me, the only thing she asked was whether or not she should open them. Everything else was added either via suggestion through posts or through PM's (which may or may not have included offers to buy) which is more then likely why she posted the link to her eBay auctions. No store mind you of an experienced seller, just eBay auctions.

I am trying not to "read" anything into Sommer's post other than she came across 97 rolls of wheaties from a handed down collection that appear to be OBW and she's wondering if she should open them. Yes, she is selling her collection so whats the biggie?

these 2 OBW Lincoln roll threads need to be combined -- Sommer when you get here - please post to one or the other, and let the other go to bottom - and please don't post a 3rd one.

Yikes... I love the shot of all those 1937-s, 1951, and 1958 Wheaties intergrating in a big red orgy of lusterful friction. image

Not the way I would ever open a bank roll I was cherry picking, as they'd come out slowly one by one... but I guess it makes for a great pic! image
